Its central image is the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a square grid over which a cosmic figure lies, with each part of the grid governed by a deity and a direction. The texts are prescriptive: they say where the entrance, kitchen, prayer room and bedrooms ideally belong.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui, literally "wind and water", developed in China from the practice of siting graves, homes and cities in harmony with the landscape. Over centuries it gathered compass methods, the Bagua (an eight-sided map of life areas) and the Flying Stars system, which tracks how energy moves through a building over twenty-year periods.

Vastu vs Feng Shui: the key differences

Laid side by side, the two systems differ in four main ways.

1. Their elements

Vastu works with the five great elements (pancha mahabhuta): earth, water, fire, air and space. Feng Shui uses five phases: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Only three overlap, and Feng Shui's phases describe cycles of change rather than substances.

Vastu assigns fixed qualities to each direction: the north-east for water and spiritual practice, the south-east for fire, the south-west for earth and stability, the north-west for air. Vastu is at its strongest before or during building, since it speaks to plot shape, the position of rooms and the placement of the entrance. 4. Their tools for correction

Traditional Vastu correction leans on relocating functions, clearing zones and simple symbolic items from Indian culture. Feng Shui uses objects such as mirrors, plants, water features and wind chimes placed with purpose.

Both treat the centre of the home as important and best kept open; both value a clear, welcoming entrance; both see clutter as blocking energy; and both rely on accurate compass readings. When they agree, the advice is usually especially worth following.
