The Mercury retrograde shadow period is the stretch before and after a retrograde when Mercury travels over the same degrees of the zodiac it will cover, or has just covered, while moving backwards. In autumn 2026 the pre-shadow runs from 4 to 24 October, the retrograde from 24 October to 13 November, and the post-shadow until 30 November.
If you have a decision or a date falling in these weeks, send us your question and I will look at where the shadow sits in your own chart.
Seen from Earth, Mercury appears to slow, stop, move backwards for about three weeks, stop again and then move forwards. Because it retraces ground, there is a band of zodiac degrees it passes three times: once going forwards, once going backwards, and once going forwards again. The shadow is simply the time Mercury spends inside that band outside the retrograde itself.
Two degrees define it. The retrograde station is the point where Mercury turns backwards. The direct station is where it turns forwards again. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the direct-station degree, and the post-shadow ends when it finally moves beyond the retrograde-station degree.
This cycle takes place entirely in Scorpio. Using UK dates:
That is almost two months in total, which is why people who treat the entire span as off-limits often feel stuck. A more nuanced approach is to understand what each phase is for. For a closer look at the retrograde weeks themselves, see our Mercury retrograde guide.
From 4 October, the themes that will be reviewed begin to appear. A conversation opens, an offer arrives, a problem hints at itself. Nothing may feel wrong yet. This is the time to observe and make notes rather than to lock things in.
From 24 October to 13 November, what was raised in the pre-shadow tends to come back for a second look. Plans change, information is corrected, old contacts reappear. The helpful posture is patience and revision.
After 13 November, Mercury moves forwards over the same ground for the third time. Loose ends from October can now be settled with better information. Energy usually feels slow at first and then clearer by the end of the month. Many people treat 30 November as the natural moment to finalise what was reviewed.
The two earlier retrogrades of 2026, in Pisces and then in Cancer, followed exactly the same three-phase shape. If you kept notes during either of them, look back now. People often find that the same kinds of issues, a certain type of misunderstanding or a recurring delay, tend to show up for them in each cycle, and that knowledge is more useful than any general list of dos and don'ts. If travel is part of your plans this autumn, our piece on planning a trip during Mercury retrograde covers the practical side.
A practical way to plan is to sort decisions by how new they are.
It is also worth knowing that Venus is retrograde this autumn, from 3 October to 14 November 2026, with its own shadow stretching from late August to mid-December. For relationship decisions, that second cycle adds another layer.
Every retrograde touches a specific area of each person's birth chart. For someone with Scorpio on the cusp of the house linked to career, the shadow may colour work conversations. For someone else, it may touch home, finances shared with a partner, or friendships. The dates are the same for everyone; the story is not.
That is where a personal reading helps. The Magic of Lucky Dates & Times service looks at the planetary positions in your horoscope to suggest the most supportive date and time within the window you have. Most astrologers treat it as softer. The retrograde weeks are the time for the most care, while the shadow asks for attention rather than caution.
Yes. Each retrograde has a pre-shadow and a post-shadow, usually around two weeks either side, though the exact length varies.
Sometimes because of time zones, and sometimes because of rounding. The dates here are calculated for the UK.
You can. Many people prefer to wait until the shadow clears for brand-new starts, but for plans already in motion the post-shadow is a good time to move forwards.
