What a career astrology reading actually examines

Sun-sign columns talk about "good weeks for work". A personal reading is different, because it starts from the exact moment and place you were born. That fixes your ascendant (lagna), and the ascendant decides which sign falls in each of the twelve houses. Two people born on the same day in Leicester and Glasgow can have quite different career houses.

The 10th house: public work and standing

The 10th house is the highest point of the chart. Traditionally it describes the work you are seen doing, your standing, the authority you carry and the way you meet responsibility. Planets placed here colour that picture: Saturn tends to describe slow, structured building; Mercury points to communication, trade and analysis; the Sun to leadership and visibility.

The 10th lord: where your working energy travels

Every house has a ruling planet, and the house that ruler occupies shows where career themes are drawn. A 10th lord in the 7th links work with partners, clients and negotiation. In the 9th it connects career to teaching, advising, law or long-distance travel. In the 12th it can describe overseas work, large institutions or behind-the-scenes roles. None of these is a verdict; each is read alongside the rest of the chart.

The supporting houses: 2nd, 6th and 11th

Vedic astrology groups the 2nd, 6th and 10th houses as the artha houses – purposeful effort in the world – and career readings usually add the 11th, the house of gains and networks. The 2nd describes the skills and resources you build on, the 6th your daily routine, service and competition, and the 11th your networks and aspirations. Reading them together stops the 10th house being taken out of context.

The dashamsha (D10) chart

You are always inside a mahadasha (major period) and an antardasha (sub-period). When either is ruled by a planet strongly linked to your 10th house, work questions tend to feel louder – a restlessness to change, a promotion conversation, a pull towards retraining. When the period planet is tied to the 4th or 12th, home, rest or distance may take more of your attention.

Saturn and Jupiter crossing the career houses

Transits add a second layer. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign and Jupiter roughly one year, so their movement through your 10th, 6th or 11th house marks longer chapters rather than single days. In a reading we look at where those two planets are for you, not for your Sun sign.
