West facing house Vastu has an undeserved reputation for being difficult. West belongs to Varuna and to Saturn, linked with steadiness and patient effort, and a west-facing UK home can be laid out comfortably. Two things deserve attention: where the door sits on the west wall, and what is happening in the north-east, at the back.

Why west-facing homes worry buyers

Popular Vastu writing ranks north and east above west and south, and that ranking travels through family conversations far faster than the detail behind it. The traditional texts do not condemn a west entrance. They set out which parts of the west wall suit a door and how to arrange the rooms, exactly as they do for every other direction. Our article on south facing houses makes the same case for that direction.

If you are weighing up a west-facing property right now, send your question with the floor plan before you decide; it is far easier to look before an offer than after completion.

What west stands for in the tradition

Varuna is the lord of the waters and, in the older hymns, a guardian of cosmic order. Saturn, the planet tied to the west, governs discipline, endurance and results that arrive through sustained work rather than luck. Read together, they make the west a direction of consolidation: the end of the day, rest after effort, and the steady keeping of what has been built.

That is why many practitioners see the west as well suited to dining rooms, studies and children's rooms, and comfortable with solid walls and heavier furniture on this side. In a UK house it also means the back garden faces east, which makes it a pleasant place for breakfast in the morning sun.

West facing house Vastu in UK homes: reading the door position

Tradition splits the west wall into equal padas. The central stretch, linked with Sugriva, Pushpadanta and Varuna, is generally favoured for the main door. The south-west end, beside the corner of Pitru, the ancestors, is the part most texts advise against, and the far north-west end is viewed with some caution too.

Counting on a narrow frontage

Measure the full width of the house front, divide it into eight or nine equal parts according to the school you follow, and note which part the door opening falls in. Looking at the house from the street you face east, so the south-west end is on your right and the north-west end on your left.

If the door is at the south-west end

This is common on terraces where the door and hallway run along one party wall. Practitioners typically work with the threshold, keeping it bright, clean and free of anything broken or stored, and making the nameplate clear, rather than suggesting the door be moved.

The north-east is behind you

In a west-facing house, the north-east, the most sensitive zone in Vastu, sits at the back left as you look at the house from the street. That is often where British homes put things Vastu would rather keep elsewhere.

Rear kitchen extensions

A kitchen in the north-east is one of the classic concerns. If an extension covers it, the usual advice is to keep the hob as far towards the south-east as the room allows, keep the north-east part of the room clear and light, and avoid parking heavy appliances there. Our guide to hob and sink placement in UK kitchens shows how to plan the run of units.

Back doors, bins and sheds

The back garden here faces east and gets the morning sun. Keep its north-east corner open, with lawn, low planting or a bench, rather than a shed, a compost heap or the wheelie bins.

The south-east, at the back right

If the rear has two rooms, the back-right one, in the south-east, is the more natural home for the kitchen. Some owners plan a knock-through so that the hob ends up on that side.

Living with the afternoon sun at the front

A west front warms up on summer afternoons and evenings. In Vastu, west and south-west are where heavier mass belongs, which suits British practicality: deep sofas, full bookshelves and lined curtains in the front room soften the late sun and anchor the space.

Use the front room for living or dining in the evening, when its light is at its best.
The main bedroom traditionally sits in the south-west, which is upstairs at the front right as seen from the street.
Children's rooms and study spaces sit well towards the west and north-west.
Keep the hallway well lit, since a west-facing hall can be dim in the mornings.
A dining table on the west side of the home suits both the evening light and the traditional advice to place dining in the west.

When a reading is worth it

If the door sits at one end of the wall, the kitchen covers the north-east, or you are about to buy, a structured look at west facing house Vastu saves guesswork. The Energy at Home / New Home session reads the home's horoscope alongside your Vedic chart, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, online in 45 minutes, working from your floor plan and compass readings. It is just as useful after you have moved in, because most of the adjustments involve furniture, light and use rather than walls. If you are still viewing properties, our viewing-day Vastu checklist helps you note what matters while you are inside.

Frequently asked questions

Is a west-facing house bad in Vastu?

No. It asks for care over the door position and the north-east, as every facing asks for care somewhere.

Should I avoid buying a west-facing house?

Facing alone is not a reason to walk away. Look at the door position, the north-east and how you would actually use the rooms.

Is a west-facing flat read differently?

The principles are the same, but the starting point is your own front door, and any balcony or main windows are noted as well. Corrections are mostly about light, furniture and a clear entrance.

Where do mirrors go in a west-facing home?

Vastu usually places mirrors on north or east walls and avoids one facing the main door, so in a west-facing front room they tend to work better on a side wall.
