If your family in Bradford keeps a handwritten janam patri, drawn up by a pandit when you were born, and you want a Vedic astrologer in Bradford to explain it, you can bring that kundli to an online session. It is checked against a fresh calculation and then used to answer the question you have now.

To get started, book a 30-minute General Reading, or send your question first if you are unsure whether the old chart and your question belong in the same session.

What a Vedic astrologer in Bradford can do with an old kundli

An inherited kundli is a valuable starting point, but most people cannot read it. The diagrams look cryptic, the notes may be in Hindi, Sanskrit, Gujarati or Punjabi, and the elders who understood it are not always around to ask. A reading turns that document into something you can use.

In practice that means three things. First, confirming that the chart matches your birth details. Second, explaining what its main features mean in plain English. Third, connecting it to the present: the period of life you are in now and the decision or concern on your mind. Whether you live in Manningham, Great Horton, Shipley or out towards Keighley, all of this happens over Google Meet or WhatsApp, so the patri never has to leave your home.

Reading the pages of a handwritten janam patri

Older kundlis vary from one family pandit to another, but most contain the same core elements.

The chart diagram

This is the square or diamond drawing showing the twelve houses and the planets placed in them. It is the heart of the document and the part most people recognise.

North Indian diamond or South Indian square

In the North Indian style, common across much of north and west India, the houses stay fixed and the numbers written inside show which sign falls in each one, with the ascendant always at the top centre. In the South Indian style the signs stay fixed and the ascendant is marked separately. Both describe the same sky; knowing which style you have avoids a lot of confusion.

The planetary table

Many patris include a table listing each planet with its sign and degree. This is where a cross-check is most useful, because a single miscopied figure can move a planet into a different sign.

Nakshatra and dasha balance

You will often find the birth nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied, along with the dasha balance at birth: how much of the first planetary period remained when you were born. From that figure the whole timeline of planetary periods unfolds, which is why it matters so much for timing questions.

Birth time in ghatis and palas

Some traditional charts give the time not in hours and minutes but as time elapsed since sunrise, measured in ghatis and palas. One ghati is 24 minutes and one pala is 24 seconds. If your patri uses this system, the clock time can be worked back from it, provided the date and place are known.

Why your chart is still calculated afresh

Recalculating is not a criticism of the family pandit. It simply adds a layer of accuracy, for a few reasons:

Ayanamsa. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, and astrologers apply a correction called the ayanamsa. Different traditions use slightly different values, so a planet sitting near the edge of a sign can appear in neighbouring signs on two charts.
Copying errors. Hand-drawn charts were often copied more than once, and figures can slip.
Place and time standards. A fresh calculation uses precise coordinates for the town of birth and the time standard in force at that date.

Where the old and new charts agree, you can be confident in both. Where they differ, I will show you exactly where and why.

From chart to conversation in a General Reading

For most inherited charts, the General Reading is the natural first session: thirty minutes, one to one, over Google Meet or WhatsApp, offering general guidance on a personal issue or a professional decision from your Vedic birth chart. With an inherited kundli, the first few minutes confirm the chart and the rest focuses on what you came to ask: perhaps a career move, a family responsibility or a relationship that needs clarity.

Thirty minutes will not cover every line of the patri. If you want a thorough walk through the whole chart and several areas of life, the In-Depth Reading gives sixty minutes for long-term guidance. For more on how charts are read online, see this guide to kundli reading online.

Sending your details before the session

Keep it simple. Type out your date of birth, the time as recorded and the town of birth, then add clear photographs of each page of the patri, including any back pages with tables. If the kundli belongs to a parent or grandparent rather than to you, say so, and only share a relative's chart with their agreement. If some pages are faded or torn, send what you have; your birth details are what matter most, and the patri acts as a cross-check.

Frequently asked questions

My kundli is written in Hindi, Gujarati or Punjabi. Can it still be used?

Yes. The chart can always be rebuilt from your date, time and place of birth, so the old document serves as a comparison rather than the only source. The diagram and numbers are usually the most helpful parts.

I have two kundlis that disagree. Which one is right?

Often neither is wrong; they may use different time sources or ayanamsa values. A fresh calculation from the best available birth time shows which features are firm and which depend on the difference.

What if my patri mentions a dosha?

Doshas are discussed calmly and in context. A single feature never defines a chart, and the reading looks at the whole picture rather than one label.

Can my parents join the call?

If you would like them there, mention it when you book. It can help to have the person who kept the patri on hand to answer questions about it.

When you are ready to have your family kundli read by a Vedic astrologer, wherever in Bradford you live, book your General Reading and send your birth details and photographs of the patri. If you have a question about the old chart before booking, use the enquiry form, and we will work out together which session gives your kundli the time it deserves.
