Vastu for the living room comes down to three decisions: put the heaviest seating along the south and west walls, keep the north-east corner light and open, and give televisions and other electrical equipment a home towards the south-east. In a British lounge with a bay window, chimney breast and radiator in the way, the skill lies in applying those principles without fighting the room.

How Vastu for the living room reads a single room

Vastu treats every room as a small version of the whole house, with each direction carrying its own quality. The living room is where a household meets guests and spends time together, so the aim is a space that feels welcoming at the entrance, settled where people sit and bright where light enters.

Find north before you move anything

Stand in the middle of the room with a phone compass, away from radiators, speakers and steel beams, which can pull the reading. Note where north falls, then sketch the room roughly and mark the four corners. Your "front room" may face a different direction from the one you assumed.

The four corners at a glance

North-east: the lightest, calmest zone. Best kept open, uncluttered and bright.
South-east: associated with fire. A natural place for the TV, lamps and electrical equipment.
South-west: associated with stability. Suits the main sofa and heavier furniture.
North-west: associated with air and movement. Works for occasional chairs or seating for guests.

Where the sofa goes, and which way you face

Heavy seating in the south and west

Traditional guidance places the main sofa against the south or west wall, so that people sitting on it face north or east. Large pieces such as a corner sofa or a heavy cabinet sit best in the south-west portion of the room. This keeps weight where Vastu wants solidity and leaves the lighter directions open.

The main seat in the room

Whoever is considered the head of the household, or simply the person who uses the room most, is traditionally given a seat in the south-west that faces north or east. Avoid placing that seat directly under an exposed beam or with its back to the door, where people come and go behind the person sitting.

When the only long wall is on the north or east

In some terraced lounges the only unbroken wall is on the "wrong" side. In that case, bring the sofa slightly away from the wall, keep a lighter or lower design, and anchor the south-west corner with something weighty, such as a bookcase or a large plant pot. Small shifts like this are often enough.

Placing the TV and other electronics

Sources disagree about the television. Many put it in the south-east, linking screens and wiring to the fire element; some prefer a north or east wall so that viewers face those directions. A sensible way through is to keep the TV and its equipment out of the north-east and to favour the south-east where the layout allows. The bigger priority is that the screen does not dominate the room's lightest corner.

Chimney breasts and alcoves

In Victorian and Edwardian homes, the TV usually ends up on the chimney breast or in an alcove beside it. If the chimney breast is on the south or east wall, that often works well. If it sits on the north, consider mounting the screen in the alcove nearer the east or west instead, and keep the hearth itself tidy and lightly decorated.

Through-lounges and knock-throughs in UK homes

Many terraces and semis have had the front and back reception rooms opened into one long through-lounge. Vastu reads this as one room with two very different ends, one facing the street and one facing the garden.

Two windows, two characters

Decide which half is for sitting and which is for activity. Usually the end facing south or west suits the sofa and settled seating, while the end facing north or east makes a good reading corner, play area or place for plants. Avoid scattering seating evenly down the whole length, which tends to make the room feel like a corridor.

The old fireplace in the middle

Where the chimney breast now sits halfway along the room, it acts as a natural divider. Use it to mark the change between zones rather than placing the sofa right in front of it, where it blocks the path between the two ends.

For seating flow from a feng shui angle, including the command position, see our feng shui living room layout guide; the two approaches often agree on the practical decisions.

Light, colour and what to keep clear

Keep the north-east of the living room free of heavy storage, piles of paperwork and tangled cables. A low plant, a water feature or simply open floor serves the zone better. If a bay window falls in the north or east, let it stay light: sheer curtains rather than heavy drapes, and a window seat rather than a large cabinet.

For walls, soft whites, creams, light greens and gentle blues suit a north or east-facing lounge, while warmer earthy tones balance a south or west-facing one. A good overhead light plus a lamp in the south-east helps in British winters, when the room may rely on artificial light for much of the day.

When a personal home reading helps

Generic rules stop working when the room has several doors, a staircase opening into it, or a layout that cannot change. The Energy at Home session is a 45-minute online consultation that combines your home's horoscope and your own Vedic chart with Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, so the advice fits both the building and the people living in it. If structural work is out of the question, our guide to Vastu correction without demolition shows the practical adjustments that come first.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should the sofa face according to Vastu?

Ideally, people sitting on the main sofa face north or east, which means the sofa itself sits against a south or west wall.

Is it bad to have the TV on the north wall?

It is not ideal if it fills the north-east, but it is rarely a serious problem. Keep the area around it uncluttered and favour the north-west end of that wall if possible.

Can a living room be in the south-west of the house?

Yes. Traditional plans often favour the north or east for a living room, but a south-west lounge works well when it is arranged with heavier furniture and warm lighting.

Does Vastu matter if I rent?

Furniture placement, lighting and colour are all things a tenant can usually change, and these everyday choices are where Vastu is easiest to apply.

For advice on your own lounge, sketch the room with north marked and show where the doors, windows, chimney breast and radiators sit, then add the birth details of the main occupants.
