Vastu for a bungalow is in some ways simpler than for a two-floor house, because every room sits on one level and maps directly onto the Vastu grid. The priorities are a calm, open centre, a main bedroom towards the south-west, a kitchen in the south-east or north-west, and a light, uncluttered north-east.

Why bungalows suit a Vastu reading so well

In a two-storey home, a reading has to consider how the upstairs and downstairs plans stack, and how a staircase interrupts the centre. A bungalow removes most of that. The whole household lives on one footprint, so the placement of each room, the entrance and the garden shows clearly on a single plan.

Bungalows are common across the UK, from 1930s seaside streets to 1960s and 1970s estates and newer single-level homes. They often appeal to people downsizing, to anyone who wants everything on one floor, and to multi-generational families looking for space around a generous plot. Each of those situations brings its own priorities.

Applying the Vastu grid to a single-level home

Vastu divides a plot into zones linked to the directions and the centre. In a bungalow, most of those zones contain a real room, which makes the guidance practical.

The centre (Brahmasthan)

Many bungalows have a central hallway with doors off it. Vastu prefers the centre open and light, so keep it clear of heavy furniture, storage and clutter. If the centre is an inner hallway with no window, good lighting and light colours help.

Bedrooms

The main bedroom traditionally sits best in the south-west, which is associated with stability and rest. In a bungalow, bedrooms are often grouped along one side, so it is worth checking which falls nearest that corner. Guest or children's rooms suit the north-west or west. Bed position within the room matters too, so check where a solid wall is available for the bedhead.

Kitchen

The south-east, linked with fire, is the classic kitchen zone, and the north-west is a common alternative. Bungalow kitchens are often at the back of the house, so the actual direction depends on how the home faces the road.

Living room

Living rooms suit the north, east or north-east, where morning light and openness support time spent together.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are traditionally kept away from the north-east and the centre. In a bungalow, bathrooms often sit off the central hall, so this is one of the first things to check on a floor plan.

When a bathroom or toilet sits in the north-east

This is common, and it can usually be managed without moving plumbing. Our article on a toilet in the north-east covers gentle adjustments for UK homes.

Loft conversions, dormers and extensions

Bungalows often appeal to buyers who plan to add space, either into the roof or out into the garden. Vastu has clear views on where height and weight should go:

Added height is generally welcomed towards the south and west, and kept lower in the north and east.
Dormers and roof extensions on the south-west side are usually easier to support in Vastu terms than ones rising over the north-east.
Rear and side extensions change the overall shape of the plan, and Vastu looks carefully at whether a corner is extended or cut away.

If you are planning any of this, our guide to Vastu for house extensions in the UK covers the principles. Planning permission and structural decisions stay with your architect, builder and local council; the reading looks at the layout and how it is likely to feel to live in.

What to check when buying a bungalow

On a viewing, bring a compass or phone compass and note:

The direction the front door faces, taken standing inside looking out.
Where the main bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms fall in relation to the corners.
Whether the centre of the home is open or blocked.
The shape of the plot and garden, and where sheds, garages or tall trees stand.
Any existing extensions that make the plan L-shaped or irregular.

Very few homes tick every box, and that is fine. Our article on Vastu corrections without demolition shows how much can be balanced with placement, colour and use of rooms.

How the home reading works for a bungalow

The Energy at Home / New Home consultation is a 45-minute online session combining the home's horoscope, your personal Vedic birth chart, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui. For a bungalow, the single floor plan makes it easy to walk through every room together during the session.

You will hear which zones of the home are working well, which are most worth adjusting, and which rooms suit which members of the household. Where a family is moving in together, the reading considers everyone's needs rather than applying one rule to all. It is guidance for reflection, so you remain in charge of every decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bungalow good according to Vastu?

A bungalow can be a very good Vastu home, because the whole household lives within one clear footprint. As with any house, the directions of the rooms and entrance decide how the reading turns out.

Which direction should a bungalow face in Vastu?

North and east facing homes are traditionally favoured, but south and west facing bungalows can work well with good internal placement. The position of the front door within that side also matters.

Can you read a bungalow from the estate agent's floor plan?

Yes. An agent's floor plan, a compass reading from the front door and a few photos are usually enough for an online session.

Whether you are buying, planning a loft conversion or settling into a bungalow you already own, the agent's floor plan and a compass reading from the front door are enough to begin. Share them through our enquiry form, or book an Energy at Home / New Home session to walk through every room together.
