Vastu for the dining table usually points to the west of the home, with the east or north as good second choices. A square or rectangular table in wood is the traditional preference, and diners ideally face east, north or west while eating. In a UK kitchen-diner, these principles help you decide where in the room the table belongs.

Where Vastu for the dining table starts: the zone, not the furniture

A dining table is where food prepared under the fire element is shared, so Vastu cares about where that sharing happens. The first question is not which table to buy but which part of the home, or of the room, should hold it.

West as the traditional first choice

Most Vastu guidance names the west as the most suitable dining zone. It is associated with satisfaction and the enjoyment of what you have, which suits a place where the household eats together. East and north follow as alternatives; the south-west is usually kept for heavier, private uses such as the main bedroom.

Kitchen-diners: carving a table zone from one room

Few British homes have a separate dining room now. Most people eat in a kitchen-diner, often at the back of a terrace or in a rear extension. Here, treat the room as its own small map. Work out which end lies west or east, and place the table there, leaving the hob and oven to the south-east portion if possible.

When the table can only go in the north-east

Some layouts leave only the north-east corner available, often because the bifold doors and the garden view are there. That can still work. Choose a lighter table, keep the area well lit and uncluttered, and avoid heavy dressers or storage around it so the corner stays open.

Table shape and material

Square and rectangular tables

Classic Vastu texts prefer square or rectangular shapes, which are associated with stability and evenness. A rectangle also suits the long, narrow rooms common in UK terraces, leaving a clear walkway along one side.

Round and oval tables

Here the sources disagree. Some advise against round tables; others accept them because everyone sits at an equal distance and conversation flows. If a round table suits your small kitchen better, it is a reasonable choice. Avoid sharply irregular or triangular shapes, which most practitioners discourage.

Wood, glass and stone

Solid wood is the traditional favourite for its warmth and grounding quality. Glass tops are widely used in modern homes; if you choose one, a wooden or solid base adds balance. Heavy stone or marble suits a dining area in the south or west better than one in the north-east.

Seating and which way you face while eating

The general guidance is to face east, north or west during meals, with east often described as the most favourable. Many practitioners discourage facing south for the main meal. In practice, a rectangular table whose long sides run north to south lets most diners face east or west. If the room forces the table to run east to west, half the table faces south, so give the north-facing side to those who eat there every day.

Even numbers of chairs are traditionally preferred to odd ones. Leave enough space behind each chair for people to stand without squeezing past the wall, since a cramped table makes meals feel hurried.

Five UK layout problems and simple responses

A table pushed against the wall. Pull it out so it can be used from at least three sides, even in a small room.
A beam or bulkhead above the table. Common in kitchen extensions where an old wall was removed. Move the table out from under it, or soften it with a pendant light hung slightly to one side.
Seating under the stairs. Some knock-through rooms put the table beneath the staircase. Vastu advises against eating under stairs; use that space for storage instead.
The table right in front of the back door. If people walk through the eating area to reach the garden, shift the table a little sideways so the path runs past it, not through it.
Toilet door facing the table. Keep that door closed and, if possible, place a screen or plant between the two.

Small changes before big ones

You rarely need to rebuild a kitchen to improve the dining area. Turning the table, changing which chairs are used day to day, improving lighting and clearing the surrounding surfaces often make a noticeable difference to how meals feel. If you are planning the whole kitchen at the same time, our guide to Vastu for the kitchen hob and sink covers the cooking side of the room.

For a layout that does not fit the textbook, the Energy at Home reading looks at the whole house. It is a 45-minute online session that brings together the home's horoscope, your own Vedic chart, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, so the advice reflects the people sitting at the table as well as the room around it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a round dining table bad in Vastu?

Not necessarily. Traditional texts lean towards square and rectangular tables, but many practitioners accept round or oval tables, especially in smaller rooms.

Can the dining table be in the kitchen?

Yes. In a kitchen-diner, keep the table towards the west or east of the room and away from directly facing the hob, so the eating area feels separate from the cooking area.

How many chairs should a dining table have?

An even number is the traditional preference. Choose whatever suits your household, with enough space around each seat.

Does the dining table need to face a particular direction?

The table itself matters less than the direction people face while eating. East, north and west are the usual recommendations.

Share a plan or a few photos of the room with north marked, plus where the doors, windows and hob are. Send it with your question or book a home session, and we will reply with a clear suggestion for where the table should go and which seats suit whom.
