Vastu colours for home are chosen by direction: soft blues and whites in the north-east, warm oranges and pinks in the south-east, earthy beige and terracotta in the south-west, and fresh greens towards the north and east. The aim is a home where each zone's colour supports what happens there, not a house painted by a rulebook.

How Vastu links colours to directions

Vastu Shastra maps the home onto eight directions plus the centre, and each is associated with an element and a ruling energy. Colours are a gentle way of supporting those qualities without moving a single wall. In broad terms:

North-east (water): white, pale blue, soft lemon. Light and uncluttered.
East (sun): light green, cream, very pale gold.
South-east (fire): peach, coral, warm orange and soft pink.
South: warm reds and terracotta, used with restraint, often as accents.
South-west (earth): beige, sand, mushroom, warm brown.
West: white, soft grey, light blue.
North-west (air): white, cream, silver-grey.
North: green and pale blue.
Centre (Brahmasthan): the lightest shades in the house, usually white or cream.

These are traditional associations, and different Vastu texts and practitioners vary slightly. Treat them as a palette to start from rather than a strict instruction.

Vastu colours for home, room by room

Most people redecorate one room at a time, so it helps to think about colour in terms of the room's purpose as well as its direction.

Bedrooms

A main bedroom in the south-west suits grounding, earthy tones: warm neutrals, soft clay or a muted rose. Very bright or stimulating colours are usually avoided in bedrooms whatever the direction. If your bedroom sits elsewhere, keep the base calm and bring in the direction's colour through bedding or cushions. Our guide to Vastu for bedroom bed direction covers placement alongside colour.

Kitchen

The kitchen is linked with fire, so warm, appetising shades such as peach, saffron, terracotta or a soft red accent sit well, particularly in the south-east. In a north-facing UK kitchen, these warmer shades also help a room that rarely gets direct sun. The article on Vastu for the kitchen hob and sink explains the layout side.

Living room

Living rooms in the north or east benefit from light greens, creams and pale blues that keep the space open and sociable. If your living room is in the south or west, warmer neutrals feel more comfortable. Seating and colour work together, so plan the sofa position before choosing the feature wall.

Hallway and landing

In many UK terraces and semis the hallway and stairs run close to the middle of the plan, which can overlap the Brahmasthan. Light, soft colours here keep the centre open and bright, and they help a narrow Victorian hallway feel less enclosed.

Children's rooms and study spaces

Light green and soft yellow are traditionally suggested for study corners, especially towards the north and east. Keep loud, saturated walls to a minimum and let children choose colour through smaller items that can change as they grow.

Bathrooms and en suites

White, pale blue and soft grey suit bathrooms in most positions. Very dark finishes are usually avoided, particularly in the north-east.

Adjusting for UK light and UK homes

Traditional colour guidance was developed in bright climates. In Britain, a north-facing room can turn a pale blue into something cold and flat, and a south-facing room can make a warm orange feel intense by mid-afternoon. A few practical adjustments help:

Choose a warmer white or cream rather than a brilliant white in north-facing rooms.
Test sample patches on two walls and look at them morning and evening before committing.
Use the direction's colour as an accent wall, a painted door or textiles if a full room in that shade feels too strong.
In a rented flat where painting is not allowed, bring Vastu colours in through rugs, throws, curtains and artwork.

Exterior colours follow the same logic, but on a UK street you may also need to consider any rules on new-build estates or in conservation areas before changing the front door or render.

Why your own chart matters as much as the compass

Directional colours are only half the picture. In Vedic astrology, each planet has associated colours, and your birth chart shows which planetary influences are prominent or worth supporting for you. Two households in identical houses might be guided towards slightly different palettes.

That is the thinking behind the Energy at Home / New Home consultation. In 45 minutes online, it combines the home's horoscope, your personal Vedic chart, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, so colour suggestions fit both the building and the people living in it. You come away with colour suggestions you can work through room by room, realistic for the home you actually have.

What to share before the session

A floor plan with north marked, or a compass reading from the front door.
Photos of the rooms you plan to redecorate, ideally in natural light.
Birth details of the main adults in the home.
Any colours you already love or would never live with.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one best Vastu colour for the whole house?

No. Vastu works by direction and purpose, so a single colour throughout misses the point. Light, warm neutrals make a sensible base, with each zone's colours added where they matter most.

Which colours does Vastu suggest avoiding?

Very dark or heavy shades are usually avoided in the north-east and the centre, and harsh, overly bright colours are generally kept out of bedrooms. Black is normally used sparingly and as an accent.

Can I use Vastu colours if I cannot paint?

Yes. Textiles, artwork, rugs and plants carry colour just as well and suit renters, students and anyone who changes their mind often.

Do Feng Shui colours conflict with Vastu colours?

They overlap more than you might expect, and where they differ, the reading looks at which approach suits your home and chart. Our article on using Vastu and Feng Shui together explains how the two are combined.
