Why tithi timing shifts in UK time

Same moment, different clock

The Purnima tithi is the last twelve degrees of the Moon's waxing journey away from the Sun, and it ends at the exact full moon. Those moments happen at the same instant everywhere, but a calendar printed in India shows them in Indian Standard Time, four and a half or five and a half hours ahead of the UK. A Purnima that begins just after midnight in Delhi may still be the previous evening in Leicester or London.

Sunrise, evening and moonrise rules

Most panchangs give the day by sunrise, as in the list above. Some observances follow different rules. A Purnima vrat is often kept on the day the tithi is current at moonrise or in the evening, and Sharad Purnima is celebrated on the moonlit night itself. That is why the vrat can fall a day before the sunrise date, as it may in several months of 2027, including March and October, when the tithi already covers the evening before. If in doubt, ask your priest or mandir which rule they follow.

Planning a puja, katha or family gathering around Purnima

Many families hold a Satyanarayan katha, a griha shanti puja or simply a shared meal on Purnima. In the UK, the practical challenge is fitting the tithi around work, school and travel.

Weekend Purnimas in 2027

The tithi covers almost all of Saturday 20 February, from 02:30 to 23:24 GMT, runs from Saturday afternoon into Sunday on 17 and 18 July, and covers almost all of Saturday 13 November. Those three are the easiest for gatherings that need guests to travel. Guru Purnima falling on a Sunday morning in July is also convenient for families who visit a teacher or temple together.

A simple planning checklist

Note the tithi window in UK time, not only the date.
Confirm which rule your priest or mandir follows for that observance.
Book the priest early, as weekend Purnimas and festival days such as Guru Purnima can be busy for priests in cities such as Leicester, Birmingham and London.
Check guests' travel and the evening moonrise if the ritual involves the Moon.

If the Purnima falls on a weekday

Many families keep a short puja on the day itself and hold the gathering at the weekend. Whether that suits your tradition is a family decision; a personalised muhurat can suggest the most supportive time on the day you choose.

When you need more than a Purnima date

Purnima is widely considered an auspicious tithi, but on its own it does not make a muhurat. For a wedding, engagement, griha pravesh or naming ceremony, the nakshatra, weekday, lagna and the birth charts of the people involved all matter, along with practical UK constraints such as venue bookings. The Magic of Lucky Dates and Times consultation weighs these together and offers the most suitable dates within your range. Frequently asked questions

How many Purnima are there in 2027?

Twelve, one in each Hindu lunar month from Pausha to Margashirsha. There is no adhik maas in 2027.

When is Guru Purnima 2027 in the UK?

The Ashadha Purnima tithi runs from 14:19 BST on 17 July to 16:45 BST on 18 July 2027, and is current at sunrise on Sunday 18 July. Your mandir will confirm the observance day.

Why does my Indian calendar show a different Purnima date?

Because it is calculated for Indian time and an Indian sunrise. A calendar set to the UK can differ by a day.
