In north facing house Vastu, a home whose main door looks north is generally well regarded, because north is the direction of Kubera and the planet Mercury. In a UK terrace, semi or flat, though, what matters more is where the door sits along the front wall and how the rooms behind it are used.

First, check that your home really faces north

Vastu takes the facing from the main entrance: stand on your doorstep, look straight out, and the direction you face is the facing of the house.

Use a phone compass at the threshold, held away from parked cars, radiators and metal door furniture, and take two or three readings.
For a flat, practitioners differ on whether to use your own front door or the building's entrance; many start with your own door.
If the reading falls between north and north-east, or north and north-west, treat it as a diagonal facing, because the advice changes.

Across most of the UK the gap between magnetic and true north is small, so it rarely changes the result unless the front wall sits close to a diagonal.

What a north front means, in the tradition and on a British street

Traditionally, north is linked with Kubera, guardian of wealth, and with Mercury, the planet of learning, trade and communication. Vastu asks for this side to be the lightest and most open part of the home, so that it can receive rather than block.

In Britain there is a practical twist. A north-facing front gets little direct sun for much of the year, while the back garden faces south and catches most of it. Estate agents tend to advertise the garden; for Vastu it means the north rooms at the front can feel dim and need deliberate help with light.

Where the door sits: north facing house Vastu for UK layouts

Traditional texts divide each wall into equal sections, called padas, eight or nine depending on the school, and each is tied to a deity. On the north wall, the central sections linked with Mukhya, Bhallata and Soma are usually favoured for the main door. The north-west end, associated with Roga, is approached with more caution.

Because some schools count from the north-west corner and others from the north-east, go by the deity names rather than the numbers when comparing sources.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Narrow frontages put the door near one end of the wall. Towards the north-east end, opinions differ: much popular Vastu welcomes it, while some classical lists are more cautious about the last sections before the corner. Towards the north-west end, practitioners usually suggest supporting measures at the threshold rather than any change to the door.

1930s semis

Doors are often set in a recessed porch or on the side wall. A side door can make the home effectively east- or west-entered even when the front faces north, so check which door the household uses every day.

Purpose-built flats

Your door may open from an internal corridor with no daylight at all. Here the work is about light and clarity at the entrance rather than its position, which you cannot change.

Room by room behind a north front

Stand in the street facing your door and the corners fall like this: north-east at the front left, north-west at the front right, south-east at the back left and south-west at the back right.

The front room

It suits sitting, study or a small shrine in the north-east corner. Try not to let it become a storage room, since heaviness in the north works against the openness this side is meant to have.

The kitchen at the back

Many terraces have a rear kitchen or an extension. On the back left, in the south-east, it suits Vastu well, since that is Agni's corner.

If the kitchen sits in the south-west

Practitioners commonly suggest keeping the hob away from the far corner, cooking facing east where the layout allows and keeping the room uncluttered, rather than moving the kitchen.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

The back-right bedroom upstairs, in the south-west, is the traditional choice for the main bedroom. A bathroom above a rear kitchen usually sits south-east or south, which is more comfortable in Vastu terms than one in the north-east. Stairs and the under-stairs WC

Vastu prefers staircases towards the south, west or south-west and is wary of a toilet in the north-east. In terraces where the stairs rise from the front hall, keep the area beneath them clear and lit; if a cloakroom WC sits there, keep its door closed and the room fresh.

Corrections that leave the walls alone

Most north facing house Vastu work in a British home is about light, weight and attention rather than building.

Light the north: brighter bulbs in the front hall, pale walls, clean windows and nothing stacked against the north wall.
Clear the threshold of shoes, bins and parcels, and keep the house number and nameplate clean and easy to read.
Move heavy wardrobes and bookcases towards the south and west, keeping the north and north-east light.
Use blues and greens in the north rooms, colours many practitioners associate with this direction.
Keep the north-east, at the front left, quiet and tidy; it is a natural place for a shrine or a reading chair.

Our step-by-step ladder of corrections without demolition explains how far to go before building work is even considered.

Frequently asked questions

Is a north-facing house good in Vastu?

It is generally considered favourable, but the door's position, the kitchen and the north-east matter just as much. A well-arranged house of any facing can be comfortable to live in.

My north-facing front room is dark. Is that a problem?

It is a natural result of the sun's path in Britain rather than a fault. Light colours, good lighting and an uncluttered north wall usually make a real difference.

Does Vastu still apply if I rent?

Yes. Furniture placement, colour, light and a clear entrance need no structural change and, in most cases, no landlord's permission.
