Why 2027 has thirteen new moons

A lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days, so twelve cycles fall roughly eleven days short of a calendar year. Every two or three years that gap allows a thirteenth new moon to fit in. In 2027 the year opens and closes with a new moon in Capricorn, and August holds two: one on the 2nd in Leo and another on the 31st in Virgo.

One small trap for UK readers: the April new moon is often listed as 6 April in calendars set to Universal Time, but because the UK is on BST by then, it falls at 00:51 on 7 April here.

The two eclipse new moons of 2027

When a new moon falls close to the lunar nodes, the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun and we get a solar eclipse. Eclipse new moons are traditionally treated as more powerful, and more unpredictable, than ordinary ones.

6 February: annular eclipse in Aquarius

Not visible from the UK. Its themes are friendship, groups, technology and the future. Many astrologers suggest observing eclipse new moons rather than setting firm intentions on the day itself, and writing intentions a few days later.

2 August: total eclipse in Leo

Partial from the UK during the morning. Close to the south node, it is often read as a release point for pride, performance and outdated roles. The total solar eclipse of August 2027 has its own guide with UK viewing times and safety advice.

How to set a new moon intention that lasts

The Karmic Keran monthly moon wishes follow each new moon through the year, and the same principles apply to any intention you set yourself.

Timing

Many people write their intention in the day or two after the exact new moon, once the Moon has moved slightly away from the Sun. The exact time matters less than the habit of returning to it each month.

Wording

Write in the present tense, in your own words, and keep it to one sentence. Make it something within your control.

An example

Instead of "I want a better job", try "I am updating my CV and speaking to two people in my field this month." The second version gives you something to do tomorrow. Our guide on writing New Moon wishes has more examples.

Review at the full moon

Two weeks later, at the full moon, look back. What has moved? What needs adjusting? This rhythm turns a yearly resolution into thirteen smaller, more realistic steps.

When one intention needs a personal answer

A calendar tells you when each new moon falls; it cannot tell you which area of your birth chart it activates, or whether it lands near your Moon sign, ascendant or a planet. That is where a personal question helps. With Ask Me a Question, you send one question, for example "Is the Virgo new moon in August a good moment to start retraining?", with your date, time and place of birth. I reply in writing with insight aligned with your horoscope, which you can keep and refer back to.
