Nadi dosha cancellation is the question most couples ask the moment a kundli matching result shows zero points for Nadi. The short answer: classical Vedic astrology lists several situations in which Nadi dosha is considered cancelled or softened, and a full reading of both birth charts tells you far more than one missing score ever can.

If you already have a matching result in front of you and simply want someone to look at it properly, send us your question through the enquiry form with both sets of birth details and say that Nadi is the concern.

What Nadi means in kundli matching

Traditional North Indian matching uses the Ashtakoota system: eight factors, or kootas, worth 36 points in total. Nadi is the last of the eight and carries the most weight, with 8 points on its own. That is why a Nadi result of zero can make an otherwise healthy total look alarming, and why families often pause when they see it.

Every one of the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) belongs to one of three Nadis:

Adi Nadi, associated in classical texts with the Vata quality
Madhya Nadi, associated with Pitta
Antya Nadi, associated with Kapha

Your Nadi comes from the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born. When both partners share the same Nadi, the koota scores zero and the result is labelled Nadi dosha. When the Nadis differ, the full 8 points are given. If you want the wider picture of how all eight kootas add up, our guide to what a Guna Milan score really means walks through each one.

The classical rules for Nadi dosha cancellation

Astrologers do not all apply exactly the same list, and different lineages give different weight to each exception. The situations below are the ones most widely quoted, and they are what I check first whenever Nadi comes up.

Same Moon sign, different nakshatra

If both partners have the Moon in the same rashi (sign) but in different nakshatras, many traditions treat the Nadi dosha as cancelled. The emotional temperament described by the shared Moon sign is seen as a point of common ground.

Same nakshatra, different Moon sign

Some nakshatras straddle two signs. Krittika, for example, begins in the last degrees of Aries and continues into Taurus. If both partners share a nakshatra like this but their Moons fall in different signs, this is commonly listed as a cancellation.

Same nakshatra, different pada

Each nakshatra is split into four quarters, called padas. Several schools consider the dosha reduced when the couple share a nakshatra but their Moons sit in different padas. Others treat this exception more cautiously, which is exactly why a reading explains which view is being applied.

Friendly or identical sign lords

When the rulers of both Moon signs are the same planet, or are natural friends, some astrologers give this significant weight. It tends to be used alongside the other factors rather than on its own.

Why a calculator rarely shows this

Many online matching calculators print the eight scores and stop there. They often do not check whether a cancellation applies, so you can be shown a red warning that a trained eye would read quite differently. The arithmetic is the easy part; the judgement sits in the exceptions.

Looking beyond the score: the rest of both charts

Even when no cancellation applies, Nadi is one factor among many. A thorough match also looks at:

the 7th house of partnership in each chart and the planets connected to it
the Navamsa (D9) chart, traditionally studied for marriage themes
Venus and the Moon in each horoscope, and how they relate
the planetary periods (dashas) both partners are moving through
whether Manglik dosha is present in either chart, and if so whether it is balanced

This is the work done in a Compatibility Reading. In 30 minutes we look at both horoscopes side by side and talk through strengths, likely friction points and how the two of you communicate, so the Nadi result sits in its proper context instead of standing alone as a verdict. For the other doshas families tend to worry about, see kundli dosha types explained.

A calm word on fear and remedies

Nadi dosha is sometimes described online in frightening terms, including claims about health or family life. I do not make medical, health or fertility predictions, and no responsible reading should. Astrology here is a tool for reflection and conversation, not a forecast of what will happen to your body or your future children.

You will also find long lists of remedies, from specific pujas to charitable giving. These are part of many families' religious practice and can be meaningful in that setting. What a reading offers is different: a clear explanation of what the charts actually show, so that any decision you make about rituals, or about the match itself, is made from understanding rather than worry.

Bringing a Nadi concern to the family

In many British Indian households the matching result reaches parents and grandparents before the couple have had a chance to digest it. A few practical steps help:

Check the birth details first. A birth time that is out by an hour or two can move the Moon into a different nakshatra, and occasionally a different Nadi.
Ask which cancellation rules, if any, were considered. A bare score of zero does not tell you this.
Share a plain-English summary rather than a screenshot of a calculator, so relatives in Leicester, Birmingham or back in India are discussing the same information.
Agree as a family what weight Nadi will carry alongside everything else you know about the couple.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nadi dosha cancelled if our Moon signs are the same?

In many traditions, yes, provided your Moons are in different nakshatras. It is one of the most commonly quoted exceptions, though a full reading will confirm it from accurate birth times rather than an approximate chart.

Can Nadi dosha cancellation be checked without exact birth times?

Partly. The Moon usually spends roughly a day in each nakshatra, so a date and a rough time often give the right nakshatra, but the pada and the rest of the chart need a reliable time. Uncertainty is always explained in the reading rather than hidden.

Does a Nadi dosha mean we should not marry?

No reading can make that decision for you. Nadi is one of eight kootas and one part of a much larger picture. The aim is to help you and your families understand the charts and talk openly, not to hand down a ruling.

Do you check Nadi for couples who live outside the UK?

Yes. Readings are held online by Google Meet or WhatsApp, or as written replies, so it does not matter whether one partner is in London and the other in Toronto or Pune.

If a Nadi result has unsettled you, the next step is simple. Send your question through the enquiry form with both partners' dates, times and places of birth, or book a Compatibility Reading to go through both charts together. You will get a clear explanation of whether a cancellation applies, what the rest of the match shows and how you might explain it to the people who matter to you.
