In Vedic astrology, moon sign compatibility for marriage is judged by counting how many signs apart the two partners' Moons sit, then asking how the rulers of those signs get along and how strong each Moon is in its own chart. A calculator handles the first step. The second and third are where a real reading begins.

Why the Moon sign leads Vedic marriage matching

Western astrology tends to start with the Sun sign. Vedic astrology starts with the Moon, because the Moon describes the mind, moods and emotional rhythm, the parts of a person that show up most in a shared home. Your Moon sign, or rashi, is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. It is often different from the star sign you read in a magazine, and our guide to finding your rashi explains why.

Traditional matching (the Ashtakoota system) gives seven of its 36 points to a factor called Bhakoot, which rests entirely on the relationship between the two Moon signs. That is why families often ask about this one factor first.

Counting the distance: Moon sign pairings and marriage compatibility

Count from one partner's Moon sign to the other's, including both. Aries to Gemini is three; Gemini back to Aries is eleven. The pair of numbers describes the relationship.

Pairings traditionally seen as supportive

1/1, the same sign. Similar emotional instincts and a quick sense of understanding.
1/7, facing signs. Each Moon sits in the other's seventh, the house of partnership. Attraction through difference.
3/11. Encouragement and shared ambitions; the third house relates to effort, the eleventh to hopes and friendships.
4/10. One partner tends to nurture the home while the other is drawn to outer duties, which can be a workable balance.

The three pairings that get flagged

Bhakoot scores zero for 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8. Each carries a different traditional theme, and none of them is a verdict on its own.

2/12 (for example Aries and Taurus)

Neighbouring signs. The second house relates to family values and speech, the twelfth to withdrawal and letting go. The tradition links this pairing to differences over how the household is run and how feelings are voiced.

5/9 (for example Aries and Leo)

This surprises people, because trines are usually harmonious elsewhere in astrology. In Bhakoot the 5/9 link is still counted as a dosha in the standard scoring, although many astrologers treat it as the mildest of the three and give it less weight than the others.

6/8 (for example Aries and Virgo)

Known as shadashtak, this is the pairing families most often worry about. The sixth house relates to friction and service, the eighth to upheaval and the hidden. The tradition reads it as two emotional styles that struggle to settle into a shared rhythm.

When a difficult pairing is softened

Classical rules list several ways a Bhakoot dosha is considered cancelled or reduced, and this is where moon sign compatibility for marriage stops being a simple count.

The same lord. Aries and Scorpio form a 6/8 pair, yet Mars rules both. Taurus and Libra also form a 6/8 pair, and Venus rules both. Capricorn and Aquarius are 2/12, and Saturn rules both. Many astrologers regard these as softened.
Friendly lords. When the rulers of the two Moon signs are natural friends, the tension is considered lighter.
Supportive navamsa. Some traditions also look at the Moons' positions in the navamsa, the ninth divisional chart used for marriage.

Because different schools apply these rules differently, two websites can give the same couple different answers. That is not an error; it reflects the tradition's own range.

Why a calculator stops short

An online tool can tell you the distance between two signs in seconds. What it cannot do is check whether the Moon positions are right in the first place, or read what surrounds them.

Birth time near a sign change

The Moon spends roughly two and a half days in each sign. If either partner was born on a day when the Moon changed sign, a small error in birth time can move it into the next sign and change the whole result.

The rest of the chart

A reading looks at the Moon's strength, the house it occupies, any planets with it, the seventh house and its lord, Venus, and the dasha periods each person is moving through. Moon pairing sits alongside nakshatra matching too, covered in our guide to nakshatra compatibility for marriage, and the full points system is explained in what your Guna Milan score means.

What a compatibility reading adds to Moon sign matching

The Compatibility Reading is a 30-minute session for couples, or for families helping with a match. It looks at both charts together, setting the Moon relationship in context: where the two of you naturally meet, where friction is likely, and how each person tends to communicate under pressure. For many UK families balancing a love match with parents' wish for traditional matching, it offers a calm, shared language for that conversation rather than a pass or fail mark.

Astrology here is guidance for reflection. It does not decide whether a marriage should go ahead; the two people and their families do.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 6/8 Moon pairing a reason to call off a marriage?

Not on its own. It is one factor among many, it may be softened by shared or friendly lords, and the rest of both charts matters far more than a single count.

Can two people with the same Moon sign marry?

Yes. A shared rashi is traditionally treated as supportive in Bhakoot, although the nakshatras within that sign are checked as well.

Which matters more, Moon sign or Sun sign?

In Vedic matching the Moon sign carries far more weight, because it describes emotional temperament and daily life together.

What if one partner does not know their birth time?

The Moon sign can often still be found from the date and place, unless the Moon changed sign that day. A reading can work with what is known and say clearly where the uncertainty lies.

When you are ready, share both sets of birth details through our enquiry form along with what you most want to understand. We will confirm the Moon signs, explain how the session would look at your pairing and help you choose a time to talk it through together.
