Mars retrograde 2027 begins on 10 January, at 10°25′ Virgo, and ends on 1 April, at 20°55′ Leo. Including the shadow periods, Mars covers the same stretch of sky from 5 November 2026 to 8 June 2027. It is a season for restarts, repairs and patience rather than charging ahead, and it begins sooner than many people realise.

Virgo, then Leo: two kinds of effort

10 January to 21 February: retrograde in Virgo

In Virgo, Mars works through detail, method and service. The retrograde often shows up as a hard look at how you work: systems that are not quite right, a task left half-finished, the habit of fixing everything yourself. It suits editing, auditing and mending. The trap is perfectionism, picking at a job until it stalls.

21 February to 1 April: retrograde in Leo

Back in Leo, attention moves to pride, creativity and leadership. Projects you once poured your heart into can return asking for another try, and questions about recognition, or about who gets to lead, come to the surface. Re-launching something you believe in suits this phase far better than starting a brand-new venture from nothing.

Working with Mars retrograde rather than against it

Mars is the planet of drive, courage, competition and initiative. When it slows and reverses, that drive tends to turn inward. People often describe feeling stuck, impatient or oddly reluctant to begin, yet surprisingly good at finishing things.

Where the retrograde helps

Returning to a goal you dropped and rebuilding it in realistic steps.
Settling an old disagreement calmly, now that tempers have cooled.
Reviewing a plan thoroughly before the spring push.
Practising a skill rather than performing it.

Where to take extra care

Picking fights

Frustration builds when progress stalls. Sleep on the sharp email and choose the conversation you actually want to have.

Brand-new ventures

Traditional electional astrology prefers new enterprises to begin with Mars moving direct. If your launch date is fixed, a lucky dates and times consultation can still find a supportive day and hour.

Major work on the home

Building projects started inside the window tend to need extra patience. Our guide to choosing an auspicious date for renovation explains how timing is approached.

The Vedic view: Mars dips back into Cancer

In the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, Mars stations retrograde at about 16 degrees of Leo, slips back into Cancer on 9 March 2027, turns direct at about 27 degrees of Cancer on 1 April, and only returns to Leo on 26 April. Cancer is the sign of Mars's debilitation, or neecha, where its fire meets water.

That does not make spring 2027 dangerous. It suggests Mars energy expressed through feeling, home and family rather than open confrontation, with frustration that may be quieter but slower to clear. In a birth chart, debilitation can be modified or even cancelled by other factors, known as neecha bhanga, which is one reason general predictions only go so far.

This transit is also separate from Manglik dosha, which is read from Mars's position in your birth chart, not from its movement in the sky. If marriage matching is your real concern, our calm guide to Manglik dosha explains the difference.

How the retrograde meets your chart

The houses Mars rules for your ascendant decide which part of life feels the slowdown most.

Aries and Scorpio rising: Mars rules the chart itself, so energy, confidence and direction become personal themes.
Cancer and Leo rising: Mars is a yogakaraka, ruling both an angle and a trine, so career and purpose questions often come up.
Taurus and Libra rising: Mars rules the seventh house, so partnerships and dealings with others ask for patience.

A General Reading lasts thirty minutes, online, and suits one clear question, such as whether to delay a launch or how to pace a demanding project through the first months of 2027.

Frequently asked questions

When is Mars retrograde in 2027?

From 10 January to 1 April 2027, moving from Virgo back into Leo in the tropical zodiac. The shadow period runs from 5 November 2026 to 8 June 2027.

Does Mars retrograde affect everyone the same way?

No. The houses involved differ for every ascendant, and people with planets between about 21 degrees of Leo and 10 degrees of Virgo, the stretch Mars crosses three times, tend to notice it more.

Can I start a new job during Mars retrograde?

Yes. Many people do, and it can work well. Treat the first weeks as groundwork: learn the systems, build relationships and save the bold moves for after 1 April.

Is Mars retrograde a bad time to get married?

Not automatically. Many muhurta traditions prefer Mars moving direct for a wedding, but a date is judged from the couple's charts as a whole. If yours falls between 10 January and 1 April 2027, have it checked.

If Mars retrograde 2027 lands on plans that matter, tell me about them through the enquiry form, along with your birth details and the dates involved. I will suggest whether a General Reading, a single written question or a date-selection consultation is the right fit for you.
