When your kundli is not matching in a love marriage, it can feel as if a number has suddenly been given a vote over a relationship you already know well. It hasn't. A low score is a prompt to look more closely at both charts, and often the fuller picture is far more nuanced than the headline result suggests.

If this is happening to you now, you do not need to work it out alone. Send your question through the enquiry form, include both partners' birth details, and say what result you were given.

Why couples in love marriages still check kundli

Plenty of British Indian couples meet at university, at work or through friends, and only think about horoscopes once marriage is on the table. Often the request comes from a parent or grandparent for whom matching is a natural part of the process, and agreeing to it is a mark of respect rather than doubt.

That is why a disappointing result lands so heavily. It is not just about the two of you; it touches family expectations, cultural identity and, sometimes, a quiet worry that you might be ignoring something important. Our piece on bringing your family along with a love marriage covers the wider family side. This article focuses on the result itself.

What "not matching" usually means

In most North Indian families, "not matching" refers to a Guna Milan total below 18 out of 36, or to one specific red flag such as Nadi dosha, Bhakoot dosha or a Manglik imbalance. In South Indian families it usually means key poruthams, such as Rajju, are missing.

A low total score

The 36 points are spread unevenly across eight kootas. Losing Nadi alone removes 8 points; losing Bhakoot removes 7. A couple can be well matched on temperament, attraction and mutual respect and still fall below 18 because of one or two heavily weighted factors.

A single named dosha

Nadi and Bhakoot doshas both have classical cancellation rules, and Manglik dosha is commonly considered balanced when both partners have it. Many online calculators do not apply these exceptions. For a calm overview of each one, read kundli dosha types explained.

A mismatch between methods

Different websites, apps and family astrologers use slightly different calculations, ayanamsas and rules. It is surprisingly common for one source to say a couple match and another to say they do not.

What to do next, in order

Before anyone draws conclusions, work through these steps calmly.

Confirm the birth data. A wrong time, a time recorded in Indian Standard Time but entered as UK time, or a misspelt birthplace can all change the result.
Find out exactly what failed. Is it the total, a single koota, or a dosha? Each calls for a different conversation.
Check for cancellations. Ask whether the classical exceptions were considered, or whether you are looking at a raw score.
Look at the whole of both charts. The 7th house, Venus, the Navamsa chart and the current planetary periods all say something about partnership that Guna Milan cannot.
Decide together how much weight it carries. For some families astrology is one voice among many; for others it matters more. Honesty about that helps everyone.

How a reading helps when kundli is not matching in a love marriage

A Compatibility Reading is a 30-minute conversation, online by Google Meet or WhatsApp, in which both horoscopes are studied side by side. You can join together from the same room, or from different cities if one of you is in Manchester and the other in London. Rather than repeating the score, it explains what produced it, whether any traditional cancellations apply, where the relationship has natural strengths, where it may need more patience, and how each of you tends to communicate under pressure.

If you would like longer to explore the relationship alongside career, family and timing questions, you can choose an In-Depth Reading instead, which runs for 60 minutes.

What a reading will not do

It will not tell you to end a relationship, and it will not promise that a marriage will succeed. Astrology is guidance and reflection. Its value here is in giving you, and your family, a clear and fair account of what the charts show, so the conversation at home is based on understanding rather than fear.

Talking to parents after a disappointing result

Often the hardest part is the conversation, not the chart. A few things tend to help:

Share a written summary of the full reading rather than a screenshot of a score.
Invite the parent who cares most about matching to join the reading, or to send their own question.
Acknowledge their concern openly before explaining what the fuller analysis shows.
Agree that astrology will inform the decision, not make it.

Respect usually travels in both directions. When parents see that the question has been taken seriously, they are often more willing to hear what the rest of the charts say.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Guna Milan score under 18 a reason to cancel a love marriage?

Not on its own. 18 is a widely quoted threshold, but it ignores cancellations and everything outside the eight kootas. A fuller reading puts the score in context so you can decide with clearer information.

Why do two websites give us different results?

They may use different calculation settings, different cancellation rules, or slightly different birth data. Bring both results to a reading and the differences can be explained.

Can we have a reading without our parents knowing?

Yes. You can book a reading for the two of you alone and decide afterwards what, if anything, to share. Some couples prefer to understand the result themselves before talking to family.

Can you help choose a wedding date as well?

Yes. Once you are ready, Magic of Lucky Dates and Times looks for an auspicious muhurat that suits both horoscopes.

If a "not matching" result is weighing on you, take one small step: send your question through the enquiry form with both sets of birth details and the result you received. From there you can book a Compatibility Reading and talk through both charts openly, with time to ask everything you need.
