Kundli matching by name and date of birth is a quick way to get a first impression of a match, but the two methods are not equal. Name-based matching guesses a birth star from the first sound of a name; date, time and place of birth let an astrologer calculate it. Here is when each approach is reasonable, and when you need more.

If you are weighing up a proposal and want both charts looked at properly, tell us what you are deciding through the enquiry form and include whatever birth details you have.

How kundli matching by name works

Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas (quarters), and each pada is linked to a particular starting syllable. Traditionally, a child's name was often chosen to begin with the syllable of their birth nakshatra. That custom is what makes name matching possible: read the first sound of the name, work backwards to the nakshatra, and run a Guna Milan calculation from there.

In families where the naming tradition was followed closely, the result can line up with the true chart. In British Asian families, though, names are often chosen for meaning, for a grandparent, or simply because the parents liked them. A Priya born under a nakshatra whose syllables begin with "Ma" will produce a name-based result that has nothing to do with her real Moon.

When a name-only match is reasonable

One partner genuinely does not know their birth date, for example because early records were lost or never kept.
You know the name was given according to the nakshatra syllable.
The family wants a rough first look before deciding whether to ask for full details.

When it can mislead

The name was chosen freely, or anglicised after the family moved to the UK.
Someone uses a nickname or a shortened form day to day.
The result is being used to accept or turn down a proposal on its own.

Why the date, time and place of birth change everything

With a date of birth, the Moon's sign and nakshatra can be calculated rather than guessed. The Moon covers a nakshatra in about a day, so the date alone often narrows it to one or two possibilities. Add the time and the place of birth, and the whole horoscope comes into focus, including the ascendant (lagna), which changes roughly every two hours.

That fuller chart is what lets kundli matching move beyond the score. The 7th house of marriage, Venus, the Navamsa chart and any Manglik placement all depend on an accurate time. Our explainer on reading a janam kundli in English shows what each part of the chart contains.

Finding a reliable birth time in the UK

If you were born in Scotland, the birth certificate records the time. Certificates in England and Wales usually do not, unless you were one of twins or multiples, so parents' memories, hospital notes or a baby book are often the best sources. For a partner born in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, an old family horoscope may hold the time even if no certificate does.

Kundli matching by name and date of birth, side by side

Put simply:

Name only – instant, but based on an assumption. Useful for a first glance, unreliable for a decision.
Date of birth only – the Moon sign is usually clear and the nakshatra often is; the ascendant and houses are not.
Date, time and place – the full horoscope for both partners, which is what a careful match needs.

When only partial details exist, a good reading is open about it. It tells you which conclusions are solid and which depend on a time that cannot be confirmed. There is more on this in our piece on compatibility readings with uncertain birth details.

What a proper matching session looks like

A Compatibility Reading takes 30 minutes and is held online by Google Meet or WhatsApp, so it suits couples in Birmingham, Slough or anywhere else, as well as families abroad. Using whatever details are available, I look at both horoscopes together and talk through:

the Moon signs and nakshatras, and the Guna Milan picture they produce
any doshas, and whether traditional cancellations apply
the natural strengths of the pairing and the areas likely to need patience
how each of you tends to communicate, and where misunderstandings may arise

If you only have a name for one partner, the session still goes ahead. I will explain which parts of the match rest on firm ground and which are provisional, and suggest gentle ways to ask the other family for fuller details without making the request feel like a test.

Astrology is offered here as guidance and reflection. It can help you see a relationship more clearly and talk about it more honestly; it does not promise an outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Is kundli matching by name accurate?

Only as accurate as the assumption behind it. If the name was chosen from the nakshatra syllable, it may match the real chart; if not, the result can be completely different. Use it as a starting point, never as the deciding factor.

Can matching be done with date of birth but no time?

Yes, to a degree. The Moon sign and usually the nakshatra can be worked out, which covers much of Guna Milan. House-based factors such as the 7th house and Manglik dosha need a time, so those will be discussed with appropriate caution.

What if one family has a horoscope and the other does not?

That is very common. Send what you have; a new chart can be calculated for the other partner from their date, time and place of birth.

Can I send just one question rather than book a session?

Yes. Ask Me a Question gives a written answer to one personal question, aligned with your horoscope, which suits a single focused concern about a match.

Ready to move past a name-only guess? Send your details through the enquiry form, mentioning what you know of each partner's birth date, time and place, and book a Compatibility Reading when you are ready. You will get a clear sense of what the charts show and how much confidence the result deserves.
