Kundli dosha types, explained plainly: a dosha is a chart combination that tradition marks for closer attention, not a fault in you. The four heard most often are manglik (Mars), kaal sarp (Rahu and Ketu), pitra (ancestral) and nadi (a matching factor). None is a verdict on your life, and each has exceptions that instant reports rarely mention.

What "dosha" means on a kundli report

The Sanskrit word dosha translates as fault or imbalance, and that translation does a lot of damage. In Jyotish, a dosha is better understood as a flag: a configuration an astrologer should examine more carefully in the context of the whole chart. Instant online reports tend to list doshas as yes-or-no results with no word on strength, exceptions or which reference point was used, so people come away worried about a label rather than informed about their chart.

Two further distinctions help. Some doshas are birth-chart features, fixed for life, while others, such as sade sati, are transits that come and go. And some belong to a single chart, while nadi and bhakoot doshas only exist when two charts are compared.

If a dosha on your report is the reason you are reading this, you can send us your question about it, or book a General Reading to have it looked at properly.

Kundli dosha types explained: the main four

Manglik dosha (Mars)

What it is

Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, with some traditions adding the 2nd, counted from the ascendant, the Moon or Venus. It is discussed mainly in marriage matching. Because it can be checked from three reference points, a large number of charts are flagged from at least one of them.

What it is not

It is not a prediction of an unhappy marriage. Classical rules list many cancellations, including the case where both partners are manglik. Our manglik dosha guide covers these in detail.

Kaal sarp dosha (Rahu and Ketu)

Every visible planet hemmed in on one side of the nodal axis. It is missing from the classical texts, astrologers disagree about whether partial cases count, and it is usually read as a theme of focused effort and later results rather than misfortune.

Pitra dosha (ancestral)

Definitions vary widely between astrologers. Common descriptions involve the Sun or the ninth house, which represent father and lineage, being afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. It is understood as a call to honour ancestors, and many families observe Pitru Paksha with shraddh rites whether or not any dosha is present.

Nadi dosha (a matching factor)

This belongs to a pair of charts rather than one. When both partners' Moon nakshatras fall in the same nadi, guna milan awards that factor zero out of eight. Tradition recognises exceptions, such as a shared Moon sign with different nakshatras. Nadi carries more points than any other factor, which is why it causes the most worry, but a reading weighs it alongside both full charts rather than treating it as decisive.

Other doshas you may see on a report

Instant reports often go beyond the main four. These are other names you may meet:

Grahan dosha: the Sun or Moon closely joined by Rahu or Ketu.
Guru Chandal yoga: Jupiter with Rahu, often read as unconventional beliefs or teachers.
Shrapit dosha: Saturn joined by Rahu.
Kemadruma yoga: no planets in the houses either side of the Moon, frequently cancelled by other factors.
Gand mool: a birth in one of the six junction nakshatras.

Sade sati, Saturn's transit of roughly seven and a half years around your natal Moon, is often listed alongside doshas, though it is a passing transit rather than a birth-chart condition. Our calm guide to sade sati explains it.

Why two astrologers can read the same dosha differently

Every dosha depends on choices: which ayanamsa, whether to count from the ascendant, Moon or Venus, how many degrees count as a conjunction, and which cancellation rules apply. A strong Jupiter aspect, a planet in its own sign or the wider dasha sequence can each soften a flagged combination. That is why one astrologer may declare a chart manglik while another does not, for instance when one side of a family in Wembley or Wolverhampton consults a pandit in India and the other asks someone closer to home. Both can be acting in good faith. It also explains why an instant list is, at most, a starting point.

A calmer way to approach any dosha

Confirm it. Check the birth time and whether the dosha survives a careful calculation.
Find the exceptions. Most doshas have recognised cancellations.
Place it in context. Read it alongside the ascendant, the Moon, the dashas and the strengths in the chart.
Decide calmly. If your family wishes to follow a traditional practice, choose it without pressure, and treat any promise of a certain fix as a warning sign.

In a General Reading, I work through exactly these steps with your chart, explain any dosha in plain English and show where it sits among your chart's strengths. For a marriage question involving two charts, a Compatibility Reading is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Which dosha is the most serious?

None should be judged in isolation. The weight of any dosha depends on its exact formation, its cancellations and the rest of the chart.

Can a dosha be removed?

A dosha is a feature of the birth chart, so it does not disappear. Some families follow traditional practices for peace of mind; a reading focuses on understanding and does not promise outcomes.

Does every kundli have a dosha?

Because the definitions are broad, a large number of charts trigger at least one on some report. That alone shows why context matters more than labels.

Should a dosha stop a marriage?

That decision belongs to the couple and their families. A careful reading of both charts in full gives far more useful information than a single flag.

Whatever language your report is in, bring it along with your birth date, time and place. Send us your question through the enquiry form and say whether one chart or two are involved, so we can arrange the right session: a General Reading for your own kundli, or a Compatibility Reading for a match.
