There are three Kharmas stretches touching 2027: the tail of the winter Kharmas, which ends at Makar Sankranti on 14 January 2027; the spring Kharmas, from Meena Sankranti on 15 March to Mesha Sankranti on 14 April 2027; and the next winter Kharmas, beginning at Dhanu Sankranti on 16 December 2027. Knowing these Kharmas 2027 dates early saves UK families from booking a venue in a window they would rather avoid.

Kharmas 2027 dates in one place

Winter Kharmas (Dhanu): began in mid-December 2026 and ends at Makar Sankranti, 14 January 2027.
Spring Kharmas (Meena): from 15 March 2027 to Mesha Sankranti on 14 April 2027.
Winter Kharmas (Dhanu): from 16 December 2027 to Makar Sankranti in mid-January 2028.

Each Sankranti happens at a precise moment, and in March 2027 that moment falls in the early hours of 15 March by UK time. Some families count the day of the Sankranti itself as the boundary, others the day after, so if your plan sits right on a boundary, send us your question and we will check it for your town.

What Kharmas is and why ceremonies pause

Kharmas, also written Khar Maas, is the period when the Sun passes through Sagittarius or Pisces in the sidereal zodiac. Both signs are ruled by Jupiter, the planet most associated in Vedic astrology with marriage blessings, elders and dharma. The traditional reasoning is that while the Sun occupies Jupiter's signs, Jupiter's supportive role in ceremonies is diminished, so the large rites of life are better held at another time.

What families usually postpone

Weddings and engagements
Griha Pravesh, the formal entry into a new home
Mundan and some other childhood samskaras
Bhoomi pujan for new construction

What usually continues

Kharmas is not an unlucky month in a general sense. Prayer, pilgrimage, fasting, study, charity and everyday work carry on, and many people find it a good time for reflection and preparation. The observance is strongest in North Indian traditions; some South Indian families treat the winter month of Dhanurmasam as a devotional season with its own customs.

Using the month well

Kharmas is an excellent time to prepare rather than wait. Families often use it to shortlist venues, gather birth details, settle guest lists and request a muhurat, so that everything is ready when the season reopens. For a move, it is a good time to sort, pack and clean, leaving the formal entry for after the pause.

How the 2027 pauses stack together

Kharmas is only one of several traditional pauses, and in 2027 they cluster in a way worth seeing on one page.

Holashtak overlaps spring Kharmas

Holashtak, the eight days before Holi, begins on 15 March 2027 by a London calculation (16 March on calendars made for India), the same day spring Kharmas starts. In practice the two merge, so many families treat mid-March to 14 April 2027 as a single closed season for weddings and house-warmings.

The reopening days

Makar Sankranti on 14 January 2027 and Mesha Sankranti on 14 April 2027 are themselves meaningful days, marked with charity, sesame sweets in January and new year celebrations in several regions in April. Families sometimes hold a small puja on the reopening day and the main ceremony a little later, once a fitting muhurat is found.

Chaturmas in the second half of the year

Chaturmas, the four sacred months, runs from Devshayani Ekadashi on 14 July 2027 to Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 9 November 2027 by the London calendar (10 November in India). Many communities avoid weddings across this whole stretch.

The open seasons that remain

Putting the pauses together, the broad open windows of 2027 are roughly mid-January to mid-March, mid-April to mid-July, and mid-November to mid-December. These are outer boundaries only. Inside them, actual wedding muhurats are fewer, because each day's tithi, nakshatra and planetary conditions must also suit a wedding. Planning a UK wedding or move around Kharmas

British life does not pause for Kharmas, so families often have to reconcile a sacred calendar with a practical one.

When a venue only has a Kharmas date

Some couples hold the civil registration or a small family gathering in Kharmas and keep the religious ceremony for an open date. Others move the whole event. Either way, it helps to decide which part of the day carries the spiritual weight before negotiating with the venue.

When completion falls in Kharmas

Property chains in England and Wales rarely bend to the panchang. A common solution is to collect the keys on completion, keep belongings boxed or live simply, and hold Griha Pravesh after Kharmas ends. Our guide to muhurat for exchange and completion explains how families separate the legal and ritual steps.

When relatives disagree

It is common for one side of a family to observe Kharmas strictly and the other not at all. Laying out the dates clearly, as above, usually turns a tense discussion into a practical one.

Finding a muhurat inside the open windows

Once Kharmas and the other pauses are set aside, the remaining days still differ in quality. Our Magic of Lucky Dates and Times service looks at the tithi, nakshatra, weekday and rising sign for each realistic date, then compares them with the charts of the couple or household. You receive a short list of options with the reasoning explained, so the final decision stays with your family.
