Choosing a griha pravesh muhurat for 2027 in the UK means lining up three things: the year's open windows, your completion date, and a time calculated for your town rather than for Delhi. Broadly, late winter, mid-April to early July and Devutthana Ekadashi to mid-December are open; high summer and early autumn are not.

Season by season: griha pravesh muhurat 2027 in the UK

Mid-January to mid-March

The winter Kharmas closes with Makar Sankranti, on the afternoon of 14 January 2027 by London time. Late winter then brings Magha and Phalguna, two of the lunar months traditional texts favour for entering a home, which makes this one of the more flexible stretches of the year for a move.

Mid-March to mid-April: a pause

With the Sun in sidereal Pisces from 15 March to 14 April 2027, most families hold back, and this pause cuts across Phalguna. If completion lands here, the furniture can go in while the ceremony waits for the other side of 14 April.

Mid-April to early July

Vaishakha and Jyeshtha, also traditionally favoured, fall across late spring and early summer. These are busy months for UK moves, so it is worth checking the windows before a completion date is agreed. Venus becomes combust, too close to the Sun to be seen, from about the first week of July 2027, and many families avoid a first entry during that time, so the window effectively closes a little before Chaturmas.

Mid-July to November: Chaturmas

Chaturmas runs from Devshayani Ekadashi on Wednesday 14 July 2027 to Devutthana Ekadashi, which falls on Tuesday 9 November on a London-calculated panchang and Wednesday 10 November on a New Delhi one. Traditionally, a first griha pravesh is not performed in these months.

If you complete in the school summer holidays

For most families in England and Wales, the 2027 summer holidays sit entirely inside Chaturmas. The usual answers are to move in, settle quietly and hold the full puja after Devutthana Ekadashi, or to make a simple entry now and a larger ceremony later. Which suits you depends on family tradition, so agree it early rather than on the doorstep.

Devutthana Ekadashi to mid-December

After Devutthana Ekadashi the calendar reopens until the Sun enters sidereal Sagittarius late on the morning of 16 December 2027, when Kharmas begins again and runs into the new year.

Already have a completion date pencilled in? Send it with the household's birth details and I can tell you how it sits against these windows before anything is signed.

Which kind of griha pravesh is this?

Tradition distinguishes three kinds of entry, and the checks are strictest for the first:

Apurva: the first entry into a newly built or newly acquired home, where the full set of month, nakshatra and tithi checks applies.
Sapurva: returning to a home you already own after a long absence, such as a spell working abroad.
Dwandwah: re-entering after major renovation, or after damage such as a flood or fire.

Families differ on how a resale house should be treated. Many regard it as a first entry for themselves, even though others lived there before, and follow the fuller apurva checks.

Matching the conveyancing timeline to the panchang

In England and Wales the completion date is normally fixed when contracts are exchanged; in Scotland the date of entry is agreed in the missives. Either way, the moment to think about muhurat is before that point, not after it.

When your solicitor asks for a target date, have two or three days from an open window ready to offer.
Remember that keys are released only once funds reach the seller's solicitor, so an early-morning muhurat on completion day may simply be unworkable.
Separate the practical move from the ceremonial entry. The removal van can come on completion day, and the family's formal entry can follow on the muhurat a few days later.
If you are renting in the meantime, see whether overlapping the tenancy by a few days gives you the room you need.

Our article on griha pravesh when completion day is already fixed goes deeper into that last-minute scenario, and property purchase muhurat for exchange and keys covers timing the legal steps themselves.

What goes into the day's calculation

The panchang

Steady, gentle nakshatras such as Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttaras, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati are traditionally preferred. Rikta tithis, the fourth, ninth and fourteenth lunar days, are usually avoided along with Amavasya, and many families also avoid Tuesdays.

The lagna in your town

The rising sign at the moment of entry is worked out for your actual location. At British latitudes the signs rise at a very different pace from India, so a time copied from an Indian list cannot be relied on, even when the date itself is fine.

The household's charts

The chart of the head of the household, and ideally those of everyone moving in, are checked so the chosen day sits comfortably for the family as well as for the calendar.

All three layers come together in the Magic of Lucky Dates & Times service, held online through Google Meet or WhatsApp, or as written replies. If you would also like the new home itself looked at, the Energy at Home / New Home session combines the home's horoscope with Vedic astrology, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui.

On the day itself

Once the muhurat is fixed, the ceremony follows family custom, but a few elements are widely shared:

a Ganesh puja, often with a Vastu puja or small havan, before or just after entry;
a kalash of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, carried in at the auspicious time;
stepping over the threshold right foot first;
boiling milk in the new kitchen until it rises over the rim, a sign of abundance in the home.

If the house has a smoke alarm close to the kitchen, plan how the havan and the stove will be managed so the moment is not interrupted.

Frequently asked questions

Is collecting the keys the same as the griha pravesh?

Not necessarily. Collecting keys is a legal step; griha pravesh is the family's ceremonial first entry. Many UK families keep the two apart so the ceremony can sit on a good day and time.

Can we stay in the house before the puja?

Customs differ. Some families will not sleep there until the ceremony has taken place; others move in and hold it shortly afterwards. Decide with your elders and plan the date around that choice.

Does a rented flat need a griha pravesh muhurat?

It is optional. Some families mark any new home with a simple puja, while many keep the fuller rules for a home they have bought or built.
