The feng shui wealth corner is usually found by standing at your front door and looking to the far-left corner of the home, or of a single room; compass-based schools place it in the south-east instead. Below is how to locate it in a UK home or flat, and how to arrange it with intention rather than expectation.

Two ways to locate the wealth area

The front-door method

Western, or Black Hat, feng shui lays a three-by-three bagua grid over the floor plan, with its bottom row along the wall that contains the front door. The top-left square, the far-left corner as you walk in, is the wealth and prosperity area, known as Xun.

The compass method

Classical schools take a compass reading from the centre of the home and place the same area in the south-east sector, wherever the front door happens to be.

Choosing between them

The two methods often point to different corners. Pick one and use it consistently, because mixing them is the most usual source of confusion and of moving the same plant around for months.

If you want a second pair of eyes on your floor plan, send it with your question and mark the front door clearly.

Finding the feng shui wealth corner in a UK home

Terraced houses

Where the front door and hallway run along one party wall, the far-left corner from the door can land in the rear kitchen, a back extension or even the garden. If it falls outdoors, a healthy shrub, a planted pot or a small solar light in that corner of the garden keeps it cared for and visible from the house.

Flats

Use your own front door, not the building's entrance. In many flats the far-left corner turns out to be a bedroom or a bathroom.

Single rooms

The same grid works for a room with its own door, which is handy if the whole-home corner is awkward. In Victorian and Edwardian front rooms the far-left corner might be a chimney alcove or the side of a bay window, both easy places to arrange.

Extensions and L-shaped plans

A rear extension across only part of the width can leave the wealth area partly outside the walls.

When the corner is missing

Practitioners commonly suggest marking the missing corner outside with a plant, a light or a stone, or hanging a mirror on the inside wall to extend the room visually. Our bagua map guide for irregular UK floor plans covers this in more depth.

What lands in British wealth corners, and what to do

Older UK homes were rarely planned with a bagua in mind, so the corner often holds something practical. None of these needs building work:

A downstairs WC or bathroom: keep the door closed and the lid down, add a healthy plant and keep the room fresh.
The boiler cupboard or under-stairs store: clear what you no longer use and keep the rest orderly and lit.
Bins, recycling or the coat pile: move them if you can; if not, contain them neatly.
Broken things: a cracked pot, a stopped clock or a dead plant is worth repairing or removing first.

Arranging the area with intention, not expectation

The wealth area is associated with the Wood element and with growth, and with the colours purple, green and gold. Traditional additions include a healthy round-leaved plant, a small water feature kept well away from electrics, or an object that represents abundance to you.

Before buying anything, it helps to answer three questions honestly:

What in this corner is broken, stuck or ignored?
What would make it a place you are happy to look at every day?
Which single object would remind you of what you are working towards?

The more useful question is what prosperity actually means in your life: security, generosity, time with family, the ability to help others. Choose objects that remind you of that, keep the corner clean and cared for, and notice how you feel when you pass it. Feng shui arranges your surroundings to reflect your intentions. It will not change your finances on its own, and decisions about money belong with a qualified adviser.

Choosing the plant

The round-leaved jade plant, often sold in Britain as a money plant, is the traditional choice, but any healthy plant with soft, rounded leaves suits the Wood element. Jade is toxic to cats and dogs, so pick something pet-safe if you have animals. In a dim corner, a lamp on a timer through the darker months keeps both the plant and the area lively.

Keeping it alive

A wealth corner set up once and forgotten soon gathers dust. Water the plant, change the water in any feature, and refresh the arrangement at the turn of the year or after a significant change in the household.

How the wealth corner fits the whole home

A single corner works best when the rest of the home supports it: a clear front door, a bed in the commanding position and a calm centre. It is worth checking those before adding objects to the corner. Vastu Shastra places the direction of prosperity differently, in the north, Kubera's direction, so if you draw on both traditions our article on using Vastu and Feng Shui together explains how to reconcile them.

The Energy at Home / New Home reading brings your home's horoscope, Vedic astrology, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui together in a 45-minute online session, so the wealth area is read in the context of the whole plan rather than in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the feng shui wealth corner always the far-left corner?

In the front-door method, yes. In compass-based schools it is the south-east, which may be a different corner of your home.

What if my wealth corner is a bathroom?

You do not need to move anything. Keep the room clean, closed and fresh, and add a living plant.

Can every room have its own wealth corner?

Yes. The front-door method can be applied to any room from its own doorway, which is useful when the whole-home corner falls somewhere you cannot change.

Do I need to buy special feng shui objects?

No. A healthy plant, good light and one object that means something to you are enough. Clearing and caring for the corner matters more than anything you add.
