Feng shui does not consider an open plan kitchen and living room a problem in itself. The aim is to make one large space behave like three: a kitchen where the cook can see the room, a dining area that links the two halves, and a living area that feels settled rather than like part of the kitchen. Hob position, zoning and the garden doors are the decisions that shape the room most.

Why feng shui treats an open plan kitchen and living room as three rooms in one

Traditional feng shui assumes walls separate cooking, eating and resting. Without them, the energy of each activity spills into the others: cooking smells drift onto the sofa, the television competes with conversation at the table, and the room never quite settles. The solution is not to rebuild walls but to give each zone its own clear identity.

A useful test is to stand at each end of the room and ask what it says about itself. If the sofa end still feels like the kitchen, the zoning needs work.

The hob: sightlines and the cook's position

In feng shui the stove represents nourishment and, by extension, the household's resources. Its position matters more than any other fitting in the room.

Seeing the room while you cook

The cook should be able to see the main entrance to the space without turning around. A hob on a wall facing away from the room leaves the cook with their back to everyone, which feng shui associates with feeling unsettled. If that cannot be changed, a reflective splashback or a small mirror can help the cook see behind them.

Hob, sink and fridge: fire and water

The hob is fire; the sink and fridge are water. Placing them directly side by side or opposite each other is traditionally seen as a clash. Leave a stretch of worktop between them, or place a wooden chopping board or a plant on the counter between the two to bring in wood, the element that sits between water and fire.

Island hobs

An island hob solves the sightline issue because the cook faces the room. Ensure a good extractor, keep the island tidy, and avoid having the sofa directly face the hob, so the living area does not feel like an extension of the cooking zone.

Zoning without walls

Flooring, rugs and ceiling

A change of floor finish between kitchen and living area is the clearest signal. Where the floor runs continuously, a large rug under the sofa does the same job. A change in ceiling height, beams or a run of pendant lights over the island also marks a boundary.

Lighting in layers

Bright task lighting suits the kitchen; softer lamps suit the living area. Putting the two on separate switches lets the cooking zone go dark in the evening, which tells the whole room that the day's work is finished.

The dining table as the bridge

Placing the dining table between the kitchen and living zones gives it a natural role: it links preparation and rest. A rounded or oval table can soften a long, rectangular room, and a pendant light above it anchors it.

Bifold doors, glass walls and energy rushing out

Many UK kitchen extensions end in a full wall of bifolds or sliding glass. Feng shui sees an unbroken glass wall, especially one that lines up with the front door, as a route for energy to flow straight through and out. Curtains or blinds that can be drawn in the evening, a large plant near the glass, or a dining table placed across the line of the doors all help energy pause inside.

If the bifolds face the garden in the north-east or east, the morning light they bring is a strength; keep that end open and uncluttered. If they face west, the evening sun can overheat the space, and softer furnishings help balance it.

Keeping the kitchen from taking over

Open worktops become a display of everyday clutter, all visible from the sofa. Keep appliances you use daily on the counter and store the rest. Choose an extractor that actually clears cooking smells, and keep bins inside cabinets. In feng shui, a calm kitchen supports the whole room, while a chaotic one spreads that energy to every corner.

If you also follow Vastu, its guidance on the hob's direction sometimes differs from feng shui. Frequently asked questions

Is an open plan kitchen bad feng shui?

No. It needs clear zoning, good ventilation and sensible hob placement, but it is not inherently unfavourable.

Should the sofa face the kitchen?

Ideally, the sofa faces the main entrance to the room or the garden view rather than the hob. A sofa with its back to the island, with a console table behind it, makes a good divider.

Can the TV be in the open plan space?

Yes, ideally in the living zone and positioned so it is not visible from the dining table, which keeps meals focused on conversation.

What if the hob faces a wall?

Add a reflective splashback or small mirror so the cook can see the room behind them, and keep the area behind the cook clear.

Before you get in touch, mark north on a floor plan and add the hob, sink, sofa and garden doors, plus the birth details of the main occupants. Ask your question through the enquiry form or book the home session, and we will come back with a clear zoning plan for the room.
