East facing house Vastu starts from a simple idea: the main door greets the rising Sun, the direction of Indra and Surya, so the front of the home becomes its source of light and fresh starts. In UK houses the details decide how well that works, especially where the door sits and where the kitchen ends up.

Morning sun at the door: why east is prized

In Vastu, east belongs to Indra, king of the devas, and to the Sun, the giver of light and vitality. An east-facing entrance takes in the earliest light of the day, and the tradition connects that with clarity, optimism and good beginnings.

On a UK street, an east front catches the morning sun and loses it by around midday, while the back garden faces west and enjoys the afternoon and evening. Front rooms feel bright at breakfast and cooler later on, a rhythm that is easy to plan a household around. A front room used for morning prayer, yoga or breakfast makes the most of it.

Placing the door on an east wall

First, confirm the reading

Stand at the main door and look out. If your phone compass, held well away from parked cars and metal railings, reads close to 90 degrees, the home faces east. Readings near 45 or 135 degrees indicate north-east or south-east facings, which carry different advice. For a flat, begin with your own entrance door and note the direction of the main windows as well, since schools differ on which counts for more.

Which part of the wall is favoured

Of the padas into which tradition divides an east wall, those linked with Jayanta and Mahendra (another name for Indra), a little north of centre, are the most widely favoured. Surya's section, at the middle, is rated differently from one text to another. The southern end, which runs towards Agni's south-east corner, is the stretch most texts treat with caution. Some practitioners welcome a door close to the north-east, while others prefer to keep that corner itself open; this is one of several points where schools disagree.

When the door is at the southern end

On a narrow terrace, the door can easily sit at the south end of the frontage. The usual responses are a well-lit, uncluttered threshold, a clean nameplate and a welcoming hallway, rather than structural change. Our guide to the main door in UK homes covers thresholds and shared halls in more depth.

East facing house Vastu across UK house types

Terraced houses

Typically the front room faces east, the kitchen sits at the back facing west, and the stairs run along a party wall. The key question is which side of the rear the kitchen falls on.

Semi-detached and detached houses

A side passage or side door can make the effective entrance north or south. Check which door the household really uses every day, because that is the one whose energy you live with.

New-build estates

Orientation changes from plot to plot on many developments, so if you are buying off-plan you may be able to pick an east-facing plot outright rather than adapting later.

Flats and maisonettes

Often only one wall has windows. If that wall faces east, keep it clear of tall furniture so the morning light can reach the room.

Corners and rooms in an east-facing home

Facing your door from the pavement you are looking west, so the south-east lies at the front left, the north-east at the front right, the south-west at the back left and the north-west at the back right.

North-east, front right: the calmest corner of the plan, suited to a shrine, a reading chair or a study desk.
South-east, front left: Agni's corner and the textbook kitchen position, although in UK houses this front room is usually a lounge.
South-west, back left: the traditional home of the main bedroom upstairs, and of heavy storage downstairs.
North-west, back right: Vayu's corner, suited to guest rooms and utility space and, as an accepted alternative, the kitchen.

When the kitchen is at the back

Most terraced and semi-detached kitchens sit at the rear, which behind an east front means the west, north-west or south-west.

Making a rear kitchen work

On the back right, in the north-west, a kitchen is broadly acceptable. On the back left, in the south-west, practitioners usually suggest placing the hob so the cook faces east and keeping the corner itself clear. Our guide to hob and sink placement in UK kitchens goes into the detail.

The centre and the stairs

Vastu asks for the centre of the home, the Brahmasthan, to stay open and uncluttered. In many UK houses the stairs rise from the middle of the hall, so the practical step is to keep the space under them clear and well lit rather than packed with coats, cases and the vacuum cleaner.

What dims an east front, and simple fixes

On a UK street, east facing house Vastu is often as much about what stands in front of the house as the house itself.

A car parked across the front window blocks the morning light the tradition values; where you can, park to one side.
Tall hedges or a solid porch on the east side cut the same light, so trim, thin or glaze them where possible.
Bins, recycling and shoes by the door weigh down the entrance; move them to the side return or the back.
Heavy curtains left closed in the morning waste the best hour of light; open them at sunrise.

These, together with the room-by-room balance above, form the starting point of the Energy at Home / New Home reading, which combines your home's horoscope with Vedic astrology, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui in a 45-minute online session.

Frequently asked questions

Is an east-facing house better than a north-facing one?

Both are traditionally well regarded. Neither is a verdict on its own, because the door's position and the way rooms are used carry as much weight as the facing.

Should the front door be in the north-east corner?

Schools disagree. Many favour the central padas of the east wall and keep the north-east corner open and tidy instead.

What if my compass reads closer to north-east or south-east?

Then the home is treated as diagonally facing, and the advice on the door and corners changes. Send the reading with your floor plan and it can be checked before you rearrange anything.

If you would like your east-facing home looked at properly, tell us about it through the enquiry form, including a floor plan, the compass reading at your door and your birth details, and I will let you know how a session would approach it.
