The Diwali 2027 UK muhurat starts with a surprise: for London, Drik Panchang places Lakshmi Puja on Thursday 28 October 2027, a day earlier than the 29 October date widely printed for India. The reason is the Amavasya (new moon) tithi, which must be present after sunset where you actually live.

If you are planning a puja, opening new account books or timing a fresh start around the festival, you can send us your question with your town and plans, and we will look at the timing for your own situation.

Why the UK date for Diwali 2027 can differ from India

Hindu festivals follow tithis, the lunar days measured by the angle between the Sun and Moon. A tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere on Earth, but the clock time and the local sunset do not. Lakshmi Puja is traditionally performed in Pradosh Kaal, the window that opens at sunset, on the evening when Amavasya is running.

In 2027 the Amavasya of Diwali ends on 29 October during the afternoon by UK time, before a British sunset. In India, which sits four and a half hours ahead of Britain during summer time, the same tithi is still current at Indian sunset on the 29th. So the evening that carries Amavasya in London is the 28th, while in Delhi it is the 29th.

What this means for families and temples

Some UK temples follow a UK-calculated panchang, while some families keep the Indian date out of habit or because relatives in India are celebrating together on a video call. Neither is wrong as a family choice, but if you want the puja to sit inside a correctly calculated window, the local calculation matters. Ask your mandir which calendar it follows before you invite guests.

The five days of Diwali 2027 in London

For London, Drik Panchang lists the festival days as follows. In the UK in 2027, Narak Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day, so the five observances fit into four dates. Other UK cities usually match, but a city several hundred miles away can occasionally shift a borderline day, so check your own location.

Dhanteras: Wednesday 27 October 2027
Narak Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja: Thursday 28 October 2027
Govardhan Puja: Friday 29 October 2027
Bhai Dooj: Saturday 30 October 2027

One practical detail: British clocks go back on Sunday 31 October 2027, the day after Bhai Dooj. Diwali week itself is still on British Summer Time, so if you compare UK timings with an Indian list, the gap is four and a half hours, not five and a half.

How a Diwali 2027 UK muhurat for Lakshmi Puja is chosen

A sound muhurat for the evening is built from layers rather than a single time printed on a poster.

Pradosh Kaal

This is the period of about two hours and twenty-four minutes that begins at local sunset. In late October, a London sunset comes early in the evening, so the window opens far earlier than the late-night times you may see on Indian sites converted carelessly.

Sthir lagna

Many traditions prefer to begin the puja when a fixed sign is rising, most often Vrishabha (Taurus) on Diwali evening. A fixed ascendant is associated with steadiness, which is why it is favoured for welcoming Lakshmi into the home.

When the windows overlap

The most valued time is where Pradosh Kaal and the fixed lagna overlap while Amavasya is running. That overlap depends on latitude, so Manchester, Leicester and London will each have slightly different minutes. We prefer to calculate it for your address rather than quote a single national time.

Chopda Pujan and new account books for UK business owners

For many Gujarati and Marwari families, Diwali is also when the year's account books are honoured in Chopda Pujan, with the new books opened around the Gujarati New Year that follows. In Britain the tax year runs from April, so this is a ceremonial and reflective new beginning rather than a bookkeeping deadline.

Making it meaningful when your books are digital

Plenty of shopkeepers and small firms in Leicester, Wembley and Birmingham now keep accounts on a laptop. Families often print a simple ledger page, write "Shubh Labh" and the new year's intentions, and place it alongside the laptop or the shop keys during the puja. The intention behind the ritual is what carries forward.

Timing a business launch close to Diwali

If you are opening a shop, signing a lease or launching a service in the autumn, Diwali week can feel like the natural moment. A personal muhurat checks whether the festival evening also suits the founder's chart, or whether a nearby day works better. Our guide to business launch muhurat in 2027 covers the wider year.

Using Diwali 2027 for a personal new beginning

Diwali is a festival of light returning, and many people use it to begin something that matters to them: a savings habit, a course, a move, a decision to repair a family relationship. The festival gives a shared, joyful backdrop, but the timing of a personal step is best judged against your own horoscope.

That is exactly what our Magic of Lucky Dates and Times service does. You share the event, the dates that are realistic for you, and the birth details of the people involved. We study the tithi, nakshatra, weekday and rising sign for your location, and how they sit with the relevant charts, then explain the options in plain English so the final choice remains yours. If you are moving house in the same season, our article on Griha Pravesh muhurat in 2027 may also help.

Frequently asked questions

Is Diwali 2027 on 28 or 29 October in the UK?

For London, Drik Panchang lists Lakshmi Puja on Thursday 28 October 2027, because Amavasya is present at UK sunset that evening. Many Indian calendars show 29 October. Check which calendar your mandir follows.

Can I use an Indian muhurat time in Britain?

Not directly. A time calculated for Delhi or Mumbai relates to Indian sunset and rising signs. Converting the clock time alone does not move the sunset, so the window needs recalculating for your UK location.

Do I need a personal muhurat for Lakshmi Puja at home?

Not necessarily. Many families simply follow their mandir's timing. A personal muhurat becomes more useful when you are tying a bigger step, such as a launch or a move, to the festival.

Which UK cities need separate timings?

Every city has its own sunset and lagna times, so Glasgow and Brighton differ by noticeable minutes. The festival date usually matches, but the precise windows are local.
