Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2027 falls on Tuesday 9 November 2027 in the UK, according to Drik Panchang's London calendar. It closes Chaturmas, the four-month pause that began on 14 July 2027, and traditionally reopens the season for weddings. In 2027 that season is short, because the winter Kharmas begins on 16 December.

If you are trying to secure a date in that window, it pays to start early. You can send us your question now with your town and the dates your venue can offer.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2027: UK date and tithi

Also called Prabodhini or Devutthana Ekadashi, it falls on the eleventh lunar day of the bright half of Kartika. For London, the Ekadashi tithi begins at 02:04 on 9 November and ends at 03:41 on 10 November 2027, Greenwich Mean Time. Calendars calculated for India list Wednesday 10 November instead, because there the Ekadashi tithi begins only after sunrise on the 9th, so check which calendar your mandir follows.

The name means "the awakening of the gods". Tradition holds that Lord Vishnu rests in yogic sleep through the monsoon months and wakes on this day, which is why auspicious ceremonies resume afterwards.

Chaturmas 2027: the four months that end here

Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, which falls on Wednesday 14 July 2027 in London. From then until Dev Uthani Ekadashi, many families avoid weddings, Griha Pravesh and other major samskaras, turning instead to fasting, scripture and simpler living.

How strictly is it observed?

Practice varies widely. Some communities hold weddings during Chaturmas for practical reasons, especially in the diaspora where summer is the easiest time for guests to travel. Others observe the pause fully. Many UK families sit in between, holding a civil ceremony in summer and the religious rites after Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Why it matters for planning

Because so many families wait for the season to reopen, demand concentrates in the weeks after 9 November. Priests, caterers, decorators and halls that specialise in Hindu weddings all feel that pressure at once.

It also affects relatives travelling from India, East Africa or North America, who often plan around the same reopening. Agreeing a shortlist of dates within the family before contacting venues saves a great deal of back-and-forth later, and makes it easier to move quickly when a good date appears.

Tulsi Vivah and the first weddings of the season

Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu in the form of Shaligram or Krishna, is performed on or just after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in most traditions. It is often described as the symbolic first wedding of the season, and families commonly perform it at home or at the mandir before their own celebrations begin.

For couples, holding the engagement, roka or a family puja around Tulsi Vivah can be a meaningful way to open their own wedding preparations, even if the main ceremony is weeks later.

The short wedding season of November and December 2027

Between Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 9 November and the start of winter Kharmas on 16 December 2027, there are roughly five weeks. Within them, the Saturdays are 13, 20 and 27 November and 4 and 11 December. Not all of those will carry a strong wedding muhurat, and those that do will be popular.

Competing with the British party season

Late November and December are also when UK venues take Christmas party and corporate bookings. Hotel function rooms in places such as Leicester, Birmingham and west London can fill early for reasons that have nothing to do with the panchang.

Short days and cold weather

Sunset in mid-December comes before four o'clock in London and earlier still in Scotland. A baraat, outdoor photographs or a ceremony under a mandap in a marquee all need planning around limited light and lower temperatures.

Using Chaturmas to prepare

The months between July and November are ideal for the groundwork. Couples can complete kundli matching, gather accurate birth times from relatives, shortlist venues with flexible terms and ask for a muhurat well before Dev Uthani Ekadashi arrives. Arriving in November with a ready shortlist gives you a better chance of securing both the date and the time you want.

When the venue offers only one date

If a venue can give you only one possible day, the question becomes how to make the best of it, such as choosing the strongest ceremony time on that day. Our article on a lucky date consultation with a fixed venue booking explains how that works.

How a personal muhurat narrows the window

A season reopening is a broad permission. Within it, each day differs by tithi, nakshatra, weekday and the planetary positions relevant to marriage, and each couple's charts respond differently. Our Magic of Lucky Dates and Times service compares the realistic dates against both partners' horoscopes, then suggests ceremony times calculated for your UK venue. We explain why each option is suggested, so families can weigh it alongside the practical constraints.
