Dasha sandhi is the junction where one mahadasha ends and the next begins. In Vedic astrology these planetary periods last from six to twenty years, so a change of mahadasha is one of the larger shifts in a lifetime. The weeks and months around the handover often feel unsettled, and understanding what is changing can make the transition easier to navigate.

If your mahadasha is about to change, or has just changed, you can send your birth details and question through the enquiry form and we can look at the timing in your chart.

What dasha sandhi means

"Sandhi" means a joint or meeting point. In the Vimshottari system your life is divided into nine planetary periods in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury, totalling 120 years. Where you start in that cycle depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each period hands over to the next, and the stretch either side of that handover is the sandhi.

Traditions differ on how wide the window is. Some astrologers focus on the final months of the outgoing period and the first months of the new one; others look at the whole last antardasha. Rather than fixing on a precise number of days, it is more useful to see it as a season of transition.

Why the last sub-period matters

Within every mahadasha, the sub-periods (antardashas) begin with the mahadasha lord and follow the same order. The final antardasha is therefore always ruled by the planet that comes just before the mahadasha lord in the sequence. Rahu mahadasha, for example, ends with its Mars sub-period before Jupiter mahadasha begins. Ketu mahadasha ends with Mercury before Venus takes over. Those closing sub-periods often carry a quality of tying up loose ends.

What a mahadasha change can feel like

People describe the sandhi in many ways. Common experiences include:

A sense that old priorities have run their course before new ones are clear.
Changes in routine, work focus or where your energy wants to go.
Endings that make room for something different, such as a project completing or a role shifting.
Restlessness, or a need for more quiet reflection than usual.

None of this is inevitable, and none of it is a prediction of misfortune. The tone depends on the two planets involved, their condition in your birth chart and the houses they rule for your ascendant.

Common transitions people ask about

Rahu to Jupiter

Moving from Rahu's eighteen years of ambition and restlessness into Jupiter's sixteen years of learning and guidance is often described as a shift from chasing to understanding. Our guides to Rahu mahadasha and Jupiter mahadasha cover each period in depth.

Saturn to Mercury

Saturn's nineteen years of effort and structure give way to Mercury's seventeen years of communication, learning and trade. The change often feels like a lightening of pace, though much depends on where Mercury sits in your chart.

Ketu to Venus

From Ketu's seven years of detachment to Venus's twenty years of relationships, comfort and creativity, this is one of the more noticeable contrasts in the cycle.

How to find your own dasha sandhi

Your dasha dates are calculated from the Moon's exact position at birth, so an accurate birth time matters. Even a difference of a few minutes can move the start and end of a period. A printed kundli from a family astrologer usually lists them, but it is worth having them checked, particularly if your birth time was estimated.

Gather your date, time and place of birth.
Note the mahadasha you are in now and the one that follows.
Identify the final antardasha of the current period.
Consider what is currently being completed in your life.

Reading your dasha sandhi with care

An In-Depth Reading is a 60-minute online session by Google Meet or WhatsApp, designed for long-term guidance. It gives room to look at both the outgoing and incoming periods side by side.

What we cover in the session

The exact timing of your mahadasha change, checked against your birth details.
The natal strength of both planets and the houses they rule.
What the outgoing period has been teaching you, and what the new one emphasises.
How major transits, such as Saturn and Jupiter, colour the handover.

If you have one specific concern, such as timing a move or a work decision near the change, the Ask Me a Question service gives a written insight aligned with your horoscope.

Astrology is offered as guidance and reflection. It does not replace professional medical, legal or financial advice, and it never promises a particular result.

Practical ways to approach the junction

Many people find the transition easier when they treat it as a natural pause rather than a crisis. A few grounded ideas:

Finish what you can. The closing sub-period often supports completion. Wrapping up projects leaves space for the new chapter.
Avoid rushing big commitments purely out of restlessness. Give new directions a little time to become clear.
Keep notes. Recording what changes in the months either side of the handover helps you recognise the new period's themes.
Follow the traditions that matter to you. Many families observe prayers or acts of service at such times, which is a matter of personal faith.

Frequently asked questions

How long does dasha sandhi last?

There is no single agreed length. Some traditions focus on a few months either side of the change, while others consider the whole final antardasha. In practice, it is best seen as a transitional season.

Is dasha sandhi a bad time?

Not inherently. It can feel unsettled because one set of themes is ending before the next is established, but many people experience it as a useful time to reassess and complete things.

Should I avoid starting new things during the sandhi?

Not automatically. Some people prefer to wait until the new period has settled, but that depends on your chart and the plan involved. A reading can look at the specific decision.

Why do different charts give me different dasha dates?

Dasha dates depend on the Moon's exact position, so small differences in birth time, ayanamsa or calculation method can shift them. Checking them carefully is part of a reading.
