For ten years, Vedic astrology says the Moon sets the emotional weather: that is Chandra mahadasha, its period in the Vimshottari system. Because the Moon represents the mind, or manas, this chapter brings feelings, home, family and your inner rhythms closer to the surface. How settled or stirred it feels depends on the condition of your Moon at birth.

Ten years under the Moon

The Moon's period is one of the shorter mahadashas, yet it is often one of the most intimate. It follows the Sun's six years and is followed by Mars's seven. Moving from the Sun's emphasis on identity and authority into the Moon's emphasis on feeling and belonging can be a noticeable change of tone. Later, Mars turns energy outward again.

If your Moon was in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana at birth, you began life in Chandra mahadasha and spent some or all of your early years in it. For everyone else the timing is fixed by the birth nakshatra: it can arrive in childhood, in mid-life or late in life, and for those born with the Moon in a Mars-ruled nakshatra it falls beyond a normal lifespan.

Wondering whether you are in this period now? Send us your question with your date, time and place of birth, and I will suggest the reading that shows where you stand in your dasha sequence.

When the mind takes the lead

Feelings closer to the surface

Emotional responses tend to become more vivid and harder to set aside. That can be uncomfortable, but it also makes this a good period for honest self-understanding and for repairing relationships that matter.

Home, family and the maternal line

The Moon is the significator of the mother and of nourishment. Caring for parents, setting up a home, moving house or reconnecting with family roots are frequent themes. If a move or a new home is part of this chapter, an Energy at Home reading looks at the space alongside your horoscope.

Being seen by the public

The Moon also rules the public and popular feeling. Work that involves caring for people, hospitality, teaching or serving customers may become more prominent, and how others feel about you can matter more than usual.

Rhythm and routine

The Moon waxes and wanes, and its period often asks you to respect your own cycles: when to be sociable and when to withdraw, when to push and when to rest.

Five things that shape a Chandra mahadasha

1. A bright or dark Moon at birth

A Moon born in the bright half of the lunar month, waxing towards full, is traditionally a stronger benefic than one born close to the new moon. This does not make anyone weaker as a person; it describes how easily the Moon's qualities flow.

2. Its sign

The Moon rules Cancer, is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio. A Taurus Moon tends to seek steadiness; a Scorpio Moon feels deeply and may need more conscious care during its own period.

3. The house it rules for your ascendant

Cancer rising

The Moon is your chart ruler, so the whole period is personal, shaping your outlook, confidence and direction.

Scorpio and Pisces rising

The Moon rules a trine house, the ninth for Scorpio and the fifth for Pisces, linking the period to belief, learning, creativity and good fortune in the traditional sense.

Sagittarius rising

The Moon rules the eighth house, so the period can turn towards inner change, research and shared commitments.

4. Planets beside or aspecting the Moon

Jupiter's company tends to steady and broaden the mind. Saturn's can bring seriousness and a sense of responsibility; Rahu or Ketu can stir restlessness or intuition. Context is everything.

5. Transits counted from the Moon

Vedic astrology reads transits from your Moon sign, so the Moon period interacts strongly with them. If Sade Sati, Saturn's passage through the signs around your Moon, overlaps this dasha, the emotional load may feel heavier. Our calm guide to Sade Sati explains it, and what is my rashi helps you find your Moon sign.

Nine shorter chapters inside the ten years

Moon–Moon: 10 months
Moon–Mars: 7 months
Moon–Rahu: 1 year, 6 months
Moon–Jupiter: 1 year, 4 months
Moon–Saturn: 1 year, 7 months
Moon–Mercury: 1 year, 5 months
Moon–Ketu: 7 months
Moon–Venus: 1 year, 8 months
Moon–Sun: 6 months

Each sub-period lord gives the Moon a different companion. Moon–Mars can bring drive and impatience into emotional life, while the eighteen months of Moon–Rahu often feel restless or hungry for change. Moon–Jupiter tends to steady and widen the outlook, and Moon–Saturn asks for responsibility, sometimes towards family. Moon–Venus brings comfort, beauty and relationships forward before the brief Moon–Sun months hand over to Mars. Because the whole period is only ten years, sub-periods pass quickly, and it is often the changes between them that people notice most. An In-Depth Reading gives sixty minutes to work through your Moon period, its sub-periods and the transits running alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

How many years is Chandra mahadasha?

Ten years in full. If you were born into it, only the balance left at birth applies, worked out from how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra.

Is Moon mahadasha always emotional?

It usually brings feelings and relationships forward, but not necessarily in a difficult way. A well-supported Moon can make these years warm, creative and connected.

What if Sade Sati overlaps my Moon period?

The two can intensify each other, because both centre on the Moon. Knowing the timing in advance helps you pace commitments and lean on the people and practices that steady you.

Do I need an exact birth time?

It helps a great deal. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so an hour's error shifts it by roughly half a degree, which is enough to move every dasha date by months.

A Moon period is easier to live with when you know its shape in advance. Send us your question with your birth details and what is on your mind, and I will suggest the reading that looks at your Moon's strength, its house and the sub-period you are in, so the years ahead feel less like weather and more like a season you can prepare for.
