Chaitra Navratri 2027 begins on Wednesday 7 April 2027, the same morning as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi, which mark the Hindu lunar new year for many communities. For UK families thinking about a new venture, the spring festival is inviting, but 2027 has a timing wrinkle worth understanding first: most of these nine days fall inside Kharmas.

Chaitra Navratri 2027 in the UK, day by day

Drik Panchang's London calendar lists the festival like this:

Ghatasthapana, Gudi Padwa and Ugadi: Wednesday 7 April 2027
Days 2 to 7: Thursday 8 April to Tuesday 13 April 2027
Durga Ashtami and Rama Navami: Wednesday 14 April 2027
Navratri Parana: Thursday 15 April 2027

Several Indian calendars give Rama Navami on 15 April 2027, so you may see both dates shared in family groups. The difference comes from where the tithis fall against local sunrise and midday. If a precise day matters to your plans, send us your question with your town and we will check it for you.

One morning, several new years

Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, is celebrated under different names. Maharashtrian families raise the gudi for Gudi Padwa. Telugu and Kannada families celebrate Ugadi with the six-taste pachadi. In the Vikram Samvat reckoning used across much of north India, the year 2084 begins here.

Kashmiri Pandit families mark the same day as Navreh. In UK homes the customs adapt to space: a small gudi tied to a balcony rail in a London flat, neem and jaggery shared at breakfast before work, or Ugadi pachadi made with its six tastes, sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent, as a reminder that a year brings every kind of experience.

Gudi Padwa is also counted among the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half days regarded as auspicious in themselves, alongside Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami and a half day after Diwali. That is why so many people like to begin something on this date.

The Kharmas overlap in spring 2027

Kharmas is the month when the Sun moves through sidereal Pisces (and again through Sagittarius in winter). In 2027, the Sun enters sidereal Pisces on 15 March and moves into Aries at Mesha Sankranti on 14 April 2027. That means the first week of Chaitra Navratri sits inside Kharmas, and the festival only clears it around Rama Navami.

What this changes in practice

Worship, fasting, study and charity are traditionally welcomed during Kharmas. What many North Indian families hold back from is the large life ceremony: weddings, Griha Pravesh and some formal launches. So in 2027 a family may happily start a spiritual practice on Gudi Padwa while choosing to wait a week or two for a wedding or house-warming.

Where families differ

Some traditions treat Gudi Padwa as strong enough in its own right to outweigh Kharmas for small beginnings. Others keep the pause strictly. Neither approach is a mistake, but it helps when everyone in the family knows which rule is being followed before invitations go out.

Planning a wedding for spring 2027

If you were hoping for an April wedding, the dates from mid-April onwards are usually where families begin looking. Our guide to Hindu wedding muhurat in the UK for 2027 walks through the seasons of the year.

Which new beginnings suit the spring Navratri

Because the festival honours the Goddess in nine forms and opens a new year, it lends itself to steps with an inner or learning quality as much as public ones.

Beginning a daily practice, a course or a new language
Setting written intentions for the new samvat year
Small home rituals, such as installing a new shrine
Planning a venture that will formally launch after Mesha Sankranti

That last option is popular with UK business owners: the idea, the name and the plan are begun during Chaitra Navratri, and the shop or service opens on a separately chosen date later in April or May. Our article on choosing an auspicious date to open a business goes deeper into that second step.

Turning the festival into a personal muhurat

A festival date is a shared doorway. A muhurat asks how that doorway fits the people walking through it. With our Magic of Lucky Dates and Times service, we look at the following for your UK location.

The daily panchang

Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and weekday for each realistic day, including whether Kharmas or other traditional pauses apply to the kind of event you are planning.

The charts of those involved

Moon sign, current dasha and key transits, so a day that is generally positive is also comfortable for you personally.

A workable hour

A supportive rising sign that avoids Rahu Kaal and fits real life, such as a school run or a shift pattern. We explain the reasoning so you can decide with your family rather than following a time you do not understand.

What to send us

A short note is enough to start: what you are planning, the town where it will happen, the dates that are genuinely possible and the birth date, time and place of the main people involved. If a birth time is uncertain, say so, because there are ways to work with approximate details.

Frequently asked questions

When does Chaitra Navratri 2027 start?

Ghatasthapana falls on Wednesday 7 April 2027 by both London and Indian calendars, the same day as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi.

When is Rama Navami 2027 in the UK?

Drik Panchang's London calendar lists Wednesday 14 April 2027. Several Indian calendars show 15 April, so check which one your mandir follows.

Many families avoid it this year because most of the festival overlaps Kharmas, which ends at Mesha Sankranti on 14 April 2027. Customs vary, so follow your family's practice.

Is Gudi Padwa a good day to start a business?

It is traditionally regarded as self-auspicious. For a formal launch, a personal check of the day and hour against the founder's chart adds clarity.
