An antardasha is a sub-period inside a mahadasha, the major planetary period of Vimshottari dasha. The antardasha meaning, in practice, is simple: the mahadasha sets the overall theme of a chapter of life, while the antardasha shows which planet is shaping that theme right now. Every mahadasha holds nine of them, one for each planet.

Antardasha meaning in plain terms

Think of a mahadasha as the season and the antardasha as the weather within it. A Saturn mahadasha lasts nineteen years, yet nobody lives nineteen identical years. Within it, the Venus sub-period may bring relationships and creative interests forward, while the Mercury sub-period turns attention to study, trade or communication. The Saturn backdrop of patience and responsibility stays in place throughout.

You will also meet the word bhukti, which means the same thing, and you may see sub-periods written as pairs such as "Jupiter–Saturn" or "Ju/Sa". The first planet is always the mahadasha lord; the second is the antardasha lord. Some printouts add a third planet for the pratyantardasha, written as "Ju/Sa/Me".

If you already have a dasha printout and simply want to know what your current pair means for you, you can send us your question or book an In-Depth Reading of your timeline.

How sub-periods are ordered and measured

The order

Every mahadasha begins with its own planet's sub-period, then follows the fixed Vimshottari order of Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury, looping round. A Moon mahadasha therefore runs Moon–Moon, Moon–Mars, Moon–Rahu and onwards, finishing with Moon–Sun.

The length

A sub-period's length is proportional to both planets' full periods: multiply the mahadasha years by the antardasha planet's years, then divide by 120.

A worked example

In a Saturn mahadasha of 19 years, the Saturn–Saturn sub-period is 19 × 19 ÷ 120, which comes to just over three years. The Saturn–Sun sub-period is 19 × 6 ÷ 120, a little under one year. The same arithmetic explains why a Venus–Venus sub-period lasts over three years while a Sun–Sun sub-period is only around three and a half months.

The starting point

Your first mahadasha, and how much of it remained at birth, depends on the Moon's exact degree within its nakshatra. The Moon crosses roughly one nakshatra a day, so even an hour's error in birth time can shift every later boundary by several months.

Reading a mahadasha–antardasha pair

Once you know which pair is running, the interesting part begins. I look at the two planets together rather than one at a time.

Are the two planets friends?

Classical texts list natural friendships between the planets. The Sun and Jupiter count as friends, for example, while Saturn and the Sun are enemies. A friendly pair tends to cooperate; an unfriendly one can feel like two priorities pulling in different directions.

How are they placed from each other?

Their positions relative to one another matter. Planets sitting sixth and eighth from each other (a shadashtaka relationship) are traditionally said to create friction, while those in mutual angles or trines tend to work together more easily.

What does each planet rule for you?

This is the layer no generic description can reach. For a Taurus ascendant, Saturn rules the ninth and tenth houses and is considered highly favourable; for a Leo ascendant, the same Saturn rules the sixth and seventh. A Saturn–Venus sub-period therefore means something quite different in each chart.

When the sub-lord outweighs the main lord

When the antardasha planet is strongly placed and the mahadasha planet is weak, the sub-period can feel more decisive than the chapter around it. Looking back, it is often a particular antardasha, rather than the wider mahadasha, that marks the time something shifted. The reverse also happens: a well-placed mahadasha lord can steady a sub-period that looks awkward on paper, which is why neither planet is read in isolation.

Going finer: pratyantardasha and beyond

The same division repeats. Each antardasha splits into nine pratyantardashas, and those split again into sookshma and prana dashas, some lasting only days. Astrologers use these finer layers when choosing timing for specific events, but they demand an accurate birth time and an honest acknowledgement of uncertainty. If your recorded time is approximate, a reading should say so and work with broader windows. Our note on readings without an exact birth time explains how that is handled.

Why a calculator gives dates but not meaning

Plenty of online tools will list your mahadasha and antardasha dates in seconds. What they cannot do is tell you what the pair means in your chart: which houses are activated, how slower transits overlap with the sub-period, or why one person's Rahu–Jupiter stretch feels expansive and another's unsettled. Working out the antardasha meaning for you specifically is the real work of a reading.

In an In-Depth Reading, I set out where you are in the sequence, read the current and next two sub-periods against your natal chart, and connect them to the questions you bring, whether they concern career, relationships or a personal decision. Frequently asked questions

Is antardasha the same as bhukti?

Yes. Bhukti and antardasha are two names for the same sub-period of a mahadasha. South Indian astrologers tend to say bhukti, while North Indian printouts more often use antardasha.

Which matters more, the mahadasha or the antardasha?

The mahadasha sets the context and the antardasha brings specific themes forward. Both are read together, alongside current transits.

Why do two websites show different antardasha dates?

Differences usually come from the ayanamsa used, the year length assumed, or a slightly different birth time. A careful reading states which settings it works with.

Can an antardasha be read without my birth time?

Only roughly. Without a time, the Moon's degree is uncertain, so sub-period boundaries are approximate and are best treated as windows rather than dates.

If you have a dasha table you cannot make sense of, or you simply want to know which pair you are living through, send us your question with your birth date, time and place. From there, an In-Depth Reading lets us go through your timeline one sub-period at a time.
