Why UK dates differ from Indian calendars

A tithi is defined by the angle between the Sun and the Moon, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere in the world. What changes is the local clock and the local sunrise. The UK is four and a half hours behind India in summer and five and a half in winter, and London's sunrise moves far more through the year than Delhi's.

The sunrise rule

Most panchangs assign a tithi to the day on whose sunrise it is current. Because London's sunrise comes several hours after India's, a calendar printed for Delhi or Mumbai can show an Amavasya a day earlier or later than a calendar calculated for the UK. Some observances use other rules too, such as the tithi current at midday or in the evening.

The July Amavasya and London's sunrise

In 2027 the Ashadha Amavasya starts at 07:36 BST on 3 July, after that morning's sunrise, and ends at 04:02 BST on 4 July, before the next one. By the strict sunrise rule it touches no London sunrise at all, while an Indian calendar gives it a day of its own. Your family priest or local mandir will tell you which day they are observing.

Why many families avoid Amavasya for new beginnings

Amavasya is the darkest night of the lunar month, when the Moon is closest to the Sun and invisible. In muhurta, the Vedic practice of choosing auspicious times, the Moon's strength matters for any beginning, so the days around Amavasya are traditionally left out of choices for weddings, engagements, griha pravesh, naming ceremonies and business openings.

That does not make Amavasya a day to fear. Traditionally it suits quieter work: remembering ancestors with tarpan, fasting, meditation, charity and finishing what is already in progress. It is a pause before the waxing fortnight begins.

Amavasya days with special significance in 2027

Mauni Amavasya (February): associated with silence and holy bathing. In 2027 it coincides with an annular solar eclipse on 6 February, not visible from the UK.
Jyeshtha Amavasya (June): observed as Shani Jayanti in many North Indian traditions.
Shravana Amavasya (August): coincides with the total solar eclipse of 2 August, partial from the UK.
Mahalaya Amavasya (September): the final day of Pitru Paksha, set aside for honouring ancestors.
Kartika Amavasya (October): the Amavasya of Diwali and Lakshmi Puja.

For festival days themselves, follow the date your mandir announces, since temples may apply additional rules. Our guide to eclipses in 2027 explains why eclipse days are also avoided for auspicious beginnings.

When to ask for a personalised muhurat instead

A list of Amavasya dates tells you which days to avoid; it does not tell you which day to choose. A good muhurat weighs the tithi alongside the nakshatra, weekday, yoga and the rising sign at the chosen time, and then checks the result against the birth charts of the people involved. In the UK it also has to fit real constraints: venue availability, registry office slots, completion dates and the working week.

The Magic of Lucky Dates and Times consultation brings these together. You share the occasion, your possible date range and the relevant birth details, and I identify the most supportive dates and times within it. For more on the method, see electional astrology and muhurta explained.
